I am working tward doing a moose hunt some time in the future. Maybe within four to six years depending on the economy and how it affects me. It will be the hunt of a lifetime for me. I have this Marlin 1894ss in .44 mag. I would love to use this gun for the hunt. But I just dont know if it is a realistic tool for that kind of hunt. Will I get close enough to plow a 240 bullet into a moose? Or are most shots on moose farther away? I do have a backup gun a 1933 Winchester Modle 70 in 30-06. It was my grandfathers rifle. I have put it in simi retierment but could use it for this hunt. Its a dead on gun. Any ideas? Here is the Marlin I would like to use.

I was up in Colorado last year got within 40 yards of several bulls. So yes you can get close. Having been that close I would want a 300 win mag , those things are as big as a horse. Just My .02

I would carry the M70 just for nostalgia's sake. But I have watched a lot of moose hunts on TV and don't know that I have ever seen a long shot on one. You could always go with Shockey, he seems to like to get them charging before he shoots-lol.

I'd rather that lever be a 45-70 if I was drawing down on a moose.

I wouldnt want to chance a close incounter with a bull moose with a .44mag, the 30-06 would be the better choice but if I had to pick one I would go with a .338win with a 225gr barnes TSX

Lots of Moose have been taken with 44 mag handguns--That levergun of yours stoked with 250gr partion gold or 300 & up gr hardcast fodder should due the job within 100yards..Good broadside lung shot will take 'em down

Maybe the old classic Winchester model 70 with a nice new modern scope would be the best way to go. I can keep the .44 mag on the hogs. Wow, yall act like these little moose are dangerous or something.

You wont regret it, hell, they kill moose with bows, muzzleloaders, handguns all the time...I would love to take my .44mag handgun on a moose hunt...Just a really big deer if you think about..

For the record, I have never hunted or killed a moose, but know several people that have. Most were killed with a 270. The general thought was that moose are not near as hard to bring down as an elk. But also keep in mind: If you are in moose country, you are probably in big bear country as well. If you are stalking a moose and come face to face with a very angry bear, what gun/caliber do you want to have in your hands.

Not saying the 44 mag would not "get things done", I am just saying it's not what I would carry (as a main weapon) if going into big bear country.

338 Win Mag has been considered the "perfect" Moose gun for many years by some of the top hunters and guides in the world.
Give me a choice between the 44 Mag and the 30-06 and I will take the '06 every time.
