i finally got around to checking out some public hunting lands. first stop...tawakoni wma - caddo creek unit. first time to check out any public hunting land and had no idea what to expect. i have gone out there the past two weekends and loved it. i saw several doe on both occasions and countless tweety birds but that is it. first time everything was covered in snow and saw hog tracks everywhere but they did not come out and play so second time i set up camp under a cedar tree by the pond and waited for sunset. no hogs. does were out all day but no other critters. looks like the perfect place and had a blast just chillin with my brother. still cant believe places like this exist. so we are thinking about old sabine wma next. you can hunt hogs with any leagal means there right now and kiddos are aloud to shoot 22's (they cant at tawakoni wma). we are going to camp and hunt for the weekend. anybody have any experience at sabine wma? helpful hints. thanks coonsaw

Cool I enjoy hunting and scouting out public hunting lands also. There are some really cool places to see and hunt, the 48 bucks is worth it to me.

this one was caddo creek unit just north of quinlan. only 162 acres. biggest problem i have is i cant take the kiddos and their 22's. so i have to go to a place that is "all legal means" for hogs. that way they can shoot their guns and practice. you also cant camp here.
any input on the sabine bottom? we will camp there also.

Check with the WMA area manager on target practice, plinking, sighting-in, etc. other than hunting. It may not be allowed.

took my 7 year old boy out to tawakoni wma. he brought his bb gun along for the ride. spent most of the day until dark looking for hogs. saw plenty of sign again and 6 deer but skunked again. there is a steel ladder stnd out there that has been there for at least a month...irresistible for my son. he had a blast just stalking around hefting his bb gun. so three trips, no hogs. had fun anyway. annoying thing is that when you walk in/out there is a small trap just on the other side of the fence on private property that has three hogs in it. they were there a month ago when i first went to this place and they are still in the trap. the smell is something awful now and i think one of them is dead. people who live there could care less and will just let them die and rot i guess. even worse is they can see the trap easily from there house. say what you will about hogs but that is a damn shame... and wrong. time to check out some other public spots. coonsaw

Coonsaw, tell the game warden about the hogs in trap,it is illegal to keep them in a trap for more than 7 days.
Life is too short, as is. Don't chance it. Don't text and drive.

Hey coonsaw, good job gettin' the young ones in the woods and doin' it legal. He'll remember these times the rest of his life.

im trying bigT. may take daughter out there this weekend. too bad she cant bring her new 22mag with us to this place. if she insists then we will have to go to another place that is "all legal means" for hogs. sure wish we could find a small place to bring kiddos that we could spend some time setting up feeders, stands, etc.... just dont have the cash.
by the way... your skinner works like a champ. will order one for me when i get some more bills paid off. thanks
