are those really bad for the gun? probly asked many a times, but after reading 20 pages or so, didn't see the said topic ask, i;ve only heard people saying not to use it but have never ever seen or heard about the damage it does, i have picked up few boxes of 40 and 9 in steel case by mistake and have shot it without any problem, it feels just like brass and didn't see any damage cost by it, maybe its long term effect? but anways need to pick up some for shooting range that does not allow fmj and the cheaper route to go is steel case ones...

My CZ 75 will eat anything I feed it, steel included. I've never experienced any issue with steel cased. It is cheaper so you can shoot more. Buy it, pull the trigger more often, have more fun. Win-win.

Well the rumors are enough to put me off on them.

I refuse to break a gun I have over a grand in just cause I wanted to cheap out on ammo. Like buying a Viper and running 87octane in it.

I hear alot of people in gun shops talk bad about steel cased ammo. I think it's all rumors. If it wasn't selling and wasn't acceptable for shooting, importing millions of rounds from Russia would be pointless. Until I hear conclusive evidence, I'll continue to shoot it.

For a while, there was at least 5 posts per day about it. Then I guess we got bored. In my opinion and experience, there is nothing wrong with them at all. If your guns receiver is softer than that case, you got trouble!

Precisely what makes brass ammo "better" than steel?

What part of your AR is not replaceable?

If you shoot enough steel case ammo to save $300 (approximately 2-3K rounds) then you can buy any part of the rifle that the wicked steel cased ammo touches (barrel, extractor, ejector).

Think folks, think...

i am trying to figure out what part of the ar, or any gun, would break by touching the steel... the extractor maybe? but in a long run on those stell case, i think it would be still worth it, i just gota go get some those stell case and shoot it, worst come to worst i'll replace some parts, live and learn i guess, but i just don't see that risk been that high up...

Obviously I am not an AR expert but I have always heard most steel case ammo is lacquered and that lacquer can build up in the chamber causing problems.

I guess after paying $50-$100 a box for most of my other rifle ammo the extra cost of brass cased 5.56 is a bargin to me.

On most guns, its hard on the Extractor and Firing pin.

The only caution I warn folks about using it, is make sure you clean after shooting before storage. Because they use very dirty primers and powder which can cause problems in the long run.

My buddy uses it on is AR & ACR and it has givin him problems, sometime the round wouldn't feed properly and gets lodged in the chamber. He would always have to get a rod & hammer and beat it out. Then again he doesn't clean his rifles properly. I run it though my AR and I haven't had any problems.

A significant source of bad information right there.

I have run several thousand rounds of steel cased ammo through BCM, LMT and Stag uppers without issue. It's dirty and sometimes underpowered but for the price it can't be beat. I have noticed no accelerated component wear on any of my guns. I ran 750 rounds of Silver Bear 62 gr through my BCM mid length without cleaning it. I had not a single malfunction.

That's the only problem with Russian ammo. It is very dirty.

why on the firing pin? due to cheap primers?

THE COATING ON STEEL CASED AMMO IS NOT LACQUER AND WILL NOT MELT.

Thank you, that is all...

Noticed that shooting the AK. That Russian 5.45 really had an ammonia odor to it.

The quality control of the steel case ammo could use some improvement. This was a round straight out of the box.
