X2. Wounding deer happens and it sucks when it does. But when it becomes a pattern you have to man up and do something about it. If he's not willing to man up then someone has to say something. I 100% agree with pulling him to the side and doing it 1 on 1.

I have a uncle that used to always wound deer with his Remington 700 270. My dad bought a nice used Remington 700 243 for him. The problem solved no more wounded deer and he even shoots the 270 now with no problems.
