Heres a group my ex-inferior factory 700 SPS Tac produced with factory ammo, and you can actually cover the group up with a dime:

I thought barrel thickness, receiver and bridge ring diameter, bolt diameter, etc. contributed to weight. Now I learn I was wrong all along---it has to do with the all the cold hammer forging! Why if they kept hammering it to a FWT contour the damn thing would weigh 25 lbs.

Speaking of 25lbs I'm thinking you need to sign up on Benchrest Central and tell them all about the huge mistakes they've been making. I'm sure your reloading, gunsmithing and general gun knowledge would wow them out of their shorts.

I know you would like that.

P.S. How many customer's did you wow today?
P.P.S. I think this is really Framis, Oldman1942.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

This is what I have determined. After reading this post and the other one on 260 vs 257 I have come to realize that overall--you guys are pretty dang smart. Or, at least you get into a lot more detail than I do. When I get ready to build another gun--I'm going to ask each of your opinions--combine what matches, and use that. Also, I'm going to have one of you guys load me some 300 WSM, with that 130 Barnes, coming out at over 3400fps.(which is the factory spec.)
I do load by the way---I just think ya'll load better. Back to the post.

Not saying Leija barrels arnt good, but If i was trying to find out something about a product then I wouldnt ask the companies competition... Im sure they have nothing good to say about remingtons becasue they build alot of barrels that end up on a rem gun, if they said they were realy good guns with out the Leija barrel the probably wouldnt sell too many.

It would be like asking BMD what the strengths of a savage are grin

Hammer forging be it cold or hot(one is formed hot, ones cold) requires very expensive tooling, but produces barrels at very low cost. This process is used by high volume operators such as manufacurers. In addition, you can form the chamber and the bore in one step.

Buttoned or cut rifling lends itself to producing lower quantities. These methods are used by custom barrel makers. This is the option if you want the best.

However, don't think hammer forged barrels are bad or inaccurate. hammer forging is just a fast process, but unlike button or cut rifling you dont get the attention to detail, so consistancy barrel-to-barrel varies more.

I haven't chimed in here but what the heck. A couple of points;
1.Hammer forging is how virtually all rifle barrels were made befor 1970. Including those beloved m70 win.
2. Button rifling is a good process but not any more accurate than a hammer forged barrel. It is easy to do and fairly fast. Plus inexpensive uses blank stock to make a barrel.
3. Cut rifle is the best and most expensive. Slow process but usually produces very accurate barrels.

I have to admit you boys are way smarter in this area than I but, really how smart do you have to be to kill with any rifle made. Like I said before, I could care less about the custom guns and great handloads. I have yet to see a deer that knew the difference between a Savage combo shooting green remingtons and a 5,000.00 custom shooting some hopped up handload with the newest greatest bullet. Dead is dead. All this is provided we are still talking hunting and not competitive shooting.

Talent is a gift, character is a decision.

Nawww. I learned that the Rem 700, and Vanguard both suck, and the Savage is just plain ugly. Guess, I'll have to pick up a Nosler Custom. bang grin

I am sad, it sounds like this fasinating thread is fading away. If it does I won't have anything to read in the evening.

vanguard,

All this thread showed, honestly, is that you really don't know a whole lot about what you speak of. If you quote characteristics about a vanguard that in your opinion makes it better than the rest, I'd suggest you figure out just what it means first before bolstering an argument. You just look kinda silly when you quote something and then two responses later ask what it means.

Google-foo, while often employed by myself in other applications, is simply not applicable when you're trying to BS the players. It might work with the fans however.

Believing a vanguard is the "best" in your eyes is great. I like the action a lot myself. This is obviously an emotional choice or maybe even a business decision if Academy is trying to sell some rifles, but I'd suggest staying away from quoting mechanical and material reasons why a vanguard is better than "x" rifle.

Don't blow yourself up with that Hornet now...grin...

As a matter of fact, I want to capitalize on your loyalty with vanguards as I have your dream rifle for sale at this very time.
