Where is the best place? Their vitals are a little more forward compared to whitetail right???

Yes, somewhere I had a post on this last week. It may be erased but there was some good points brought up by people that have actually killed them and some people that have never shot one. They are much tougher. Whatch your shot and the direction they run. Won't act hit and sometimes dont bleed. front of shoulder or neck should get it done.

I've yet to shoot an axis but I have found that on WT deer when I make a behind the shoulder shot it sometimes ends up being a little farther back on the vitals than I planed on. And if they are at a slight angle that you don't really notice then this compounds the problem.
Don't get me wrong, they've all been easy tracking but I've pretty much decided that from now on Does are gonna get head, neck or shoulder shot and bucks are gonna get shoulder shot. This should eliminate ANY tracking.
I do know that axis are bigger and meatier so I think I'd take the same approach with one of them if I were gonna go shoot one.

X2 and then call me to come and help clean it for you...I'll only charge you a little..say half the meat? Fair right?

We have shot 10 or 15 axis and have shot them just like a whitetail. No difference that I can tell.
Right behind the shoulder, neck or head will get the job done.

It depends on how much meat you want to waste on where you shoot them.

I shot one last week as she was angling away from me with my 30-06. Hit her behind the right shoulder. It went through the vital area and out the left shoulder. She ran about 75 yards. I did not find blood until I was around 25 yards from finding her.

I've had white tail to do that as well. Make a good boiler room shot and no blood then a really good blood trail and I find my deer. I was told they hold their breath and then exhale and cause the blood trail.

This was exactly my experience 2 weekends ago, but I use a .308 Winchester with 150 grain SST Hornady bullets. I put it just behind her left shoulder, it completely destroyed her right shoulder but there was no gaping hole on her right side where the bullet exited. I knew she was hit hard by the way she humped up, however she still managed to make an arch of about 75 yards before piling up. There was one drop of blood/tissue at the spot she was it at and then no other blood till 5 yards from where I found her. They are very tough critters. My wife has plans on hunting an Axis buck in the spring. We have been to the ranch twice in the fall and the ranch owner has advised her to not use her 243 for this reason. She is after one of their top bucks which means it is one of their bigger sized bucks. I am hoping that she will use my Browning 30-06.

We shoot'em just like whitetails right behind the shoulder, it works everytime. As far as having to have a bigger gun, B.S. my ol'lady shoot's a .243 and has killed Axis AND Aoudad with it.
