They are all semi auto. Double stack means the rounds are stagered in the magazine so it can hold more rounds. Single stack , like most 1911s and varriants are, line up on top of each other. Para Ordanance were among one of the first 1911 style pistols that were designed for the stagered type magazine.
You should really check out a couple of the 1911 forums and handle as many as you can before you make a decision.
From my experience the top of the line RIA is comparable to the entry level Springfield or Kimbers in quality. If you get into the guts and frame of both you will notice a huge difference.

Having owned Both the Taurus ALR and Sprignfield GI I can give you this. The Springfield GI was a nice tight gun, but those super low-pro GI sights SUCK. You will have to do a sight job if you planed on using it for any competition. But you can find them for 500ish and purchase sights install yourself and stil be GTG. The Taurus was really a Shocker, I had the Aluminum Frame Lightweight version and it would plain shoot, as good as my Friends Kimber SIS in my Hands. That being said some of the parts are crappy if your using it for comps you will have to replace the Thumb-safety its very common breakage under hard use. Still I would recomend both just know the do have caviats going into it. If your really going to use the Gun for what you say get the STI Spartan. http://www.stiguns.com/guns/Spartan/Spartan.phpIts at the top of your price point, but its so worth it. There Made here in Texas(Georgetown) by Texans. Your Dollars support Local Economy and This Great State, plus your getting a top of the line firearm.

They are in control of QC standards on both ends so your still getting alot better quality product than most entry level 1911's. Another thing is they make a profit off it, as long as they make money, they stay in buiseness employing Local People at there Facility in Georgetown If I had it to do over and in the Future the only 1911's that would/will be in my Safe will start with "S" STI, Springfield, and Sig Sauer.

Happy Birthday!! I recommended looking at the Para because I have one, not that particular model but the P12 Limited. It's been an awesome pistol and I've never had any issues with it. Have had a bunch of rounds thru it, factory and my hand loads and it's been 100%.

any more insight on this guys, havent bought one yet but will be doing so in the next few weeks to month. Im really looking at the Taurus' now do to affordability and the Springfield I want I have not been able to find one for sale. I think the Taurus does offer alot of options for the money, what things should I look at putting on a 1911 to use it for competition??? Thanks Danny

I'd get the STI Spartan or Para GI Expert over the Taurus. I own an STI Trojan and a Para GI Expert. The GI Expert has run flawlessly after the breakin of around 500 rounds. It's not pretty and I changed the grip panels on it to get a better grip. It's a shooter.
