New poster here, so pardon me if I've posted this in the wrong forum. There so much information here I'm having difficulty finding the answers to my questions.

I just bought .22's for my wife and me and I'd like to find a place to target practice. In my youth, we'd just go off to the woods and find a safe place to plink. That was a long time ago and I am quite sure the rules have changed since then.

I realize that I can find many indoor ranges, but the cost seems a little silly for some lazy plinking and target practice. Are there any federal or state lands that are available for us to shoot on? We aren't going to be hunting anything.

I should probably add that I am in the Fort Worth area.

That is a great question.

I am certain none of the public State WMAs and Corps of Engineers hunting areas allow target shooting. But some may have a free shooting range area available to the public. Maybe one or more of our members will be aware of one. I'm not.

National Forests I don't know. I know some out of State ones allow it. I know people do on some Texas National forests, but that does not mean it is legal to do so here. If someone knows please post where it is referenced in the area rules, regs. I would like to know too.

LBJ Grasslands I know has or had an area set aside for target shooting shotguns, but pistols and rifles not allowed. I'll see what I can dig up on that.

Found it.
Recreational rifle and pistol target shooting on the LBJ Grasslands is closed. On the LBJ’s western border, 380 acres are open to clay pigeon shooting with shotguns. That would be Unit 3.

And then related to all Texas National Forests and Grasslands, other than that unit on LBJ all are closed to target shooting.
Target Practice
All other areas are closed to target shooting. Information on areas to sight in weapons may be available at district offices.

Thank you Sniper John for your efforts. Ho hum, I would have thought that my beloved Texas would be one of those states that would allow such activity. I can honestly say that bums me out.

A related question if you will. Would you or any of the other members know if there is any where in Oklahoma that allows this? Being in North Texas, it's just a hop, skip and a jump to get across the state lines, plus might find some time to waste a few pennies on the slots.

Thanks again for helping me to find the answer (although not the one I wanted <grin>)

Join the Weatherford Gun Club, they have a range out at Poolville and their membership is around $25-$30 a year.

PS. I'm not sure if that's the offical name, but it's close. It might be sportsman club. I don't remember exactly.
