My Browning A-Bolt 30-06 loves the cheap Fed blue box 125 grain. It will put 3 in a group that a dime will almost cover and I think that placement is as important as anything else and more so than bullet weight. I don't think a deer or even an elk is going far with 1 or both lungs blown out and maybe bone fragments thru the heart.

I like to use 165gr Remington soft point factory load core-lokt's and have never had any issues with downing a deer. You may just try a heavier bullet. The last deer I shot with one was a buck (130# FD) and he only stepped off about 10 yds. This was a lung shot. I have shot many in the past in the neck and they drop where I shot them.
I do agree with HLo's observation about the tips not being uniform out of the box. I have also noticed that the bullet seating is different out of the box.
I am now experimenting with different handloads using a 165gr Remington AccuTips as the bullet. Which I believe are made by Hornady for Remington. So far the results are encouraging for accuracy and effectiveness.

I posted that I bought Winchester 150 grain balistics at another location but not getting much of a response. What is your favorite load for deer and dropping them. I am wanting to switch to something different then Remington Core lokt (150 grain). I have shot Remington Core Lokt 150 gr for 15 years and I love them. I can shoot 1 in groups at 100 yards all day. I have complete confidence that if the buck of a lifetime shows up or a 400 lb hog, that I have the bullet that will take them down. Every time you go into the woods you have to be prepared for the shot of a lifetime because you never know.

i think the 06's are a little much for deer too.
i shoot 165 grain in the new 06' that i aquired, but haven't shot a deer with it, i love my .270 too much Huh? There aren't many ballistic differences in speed or energy between the .06 and 270. The main difference is the selection of factory loads you get with an .06.
