Sounds like a giood in-law. And 100 grainshould do it. Be careful as to saying who he bought the rifle for. Not to dampen the post and excitement but it is against the law to "buy" a firearm for anyone....but a gift is legit.

I switched to Federal Fusion this season with great results. I've shot nine deer and all but 2 passed through. The 2 that did not were facing me and I shot them in the chest. They both went about 10 yards, so no blood trail was needed. It's also one of the less expensive ammo on the market.

I've been shooting a Winchester Model 70 since around 1982 and it is basically my go to Texas game gun. Whitetails, mulies, coyotes, javelina...... Love it....low recoil, shoots flat and hits like lightning.
Recommendation is to shoot the various loads to see what groups best in your gun due to the twist. Mine shoots the lighter bullets best (75 gr to 100 gr). Been using the Sierra 100 grain ProHunters w/ IMR 4831 exclusively with no probelms with bullets performance. Congrats on your new rifle.

My gun does not like the 120 grain in anything, factory or handloads. It shoots the 100 gr stuff very well, but when I loaded the Sierra Gamekings in 117 gr I didnt need to search anymore. In fact, it was my very first set of 5 loaded and didnt even do anymore loads. My load was found.

You will really enjoy this caliber. I'm shooting 117 gr hornady sst's. Ive shot two deer with these and no need for tracking.

in mine, i shoot 100 gr corelokts .. they are cheap and will shoot tacks from my gun. so i would try a few and use what shoots well.
i have taken down whitetail as well as aoudad with it this year.

Great caliber! I also shoot the Hornady 117 gr BTSP, and it has put down a half-dozen Axis (which of course are notoriously tough) so far, and most dropped in their tracks.

I have two boxes of Hornady 117 grain SST that I would be willing to sell. I would sell them for $55 TYD. Let me know if you are interested in them. Great bullets, I just dont have my .25-06 anymore.
And yes, it was stupid for me to sell it. Still kicking myself for that one. LOL!

100 grain TSX, if you reload 100 grain TTSX or 80 grain TTSX.
also for OTC ammo I had good luck with the Nosler Custom Ammo in 100 grain partition. They are loaded at 3300 ft
I would not shoot a cup and core bullet in a 25-06 or any thing 25cal or under.. just my two cents. To many other good choics out there.
I'm a huge quarterbore fan. either hunt with my 25-06 or 257 wby

3 of us in my family shoot 25-06's. We handload 117 grain Sierra Gamekings and they do a great job on hogs and deer. Closest factory round to it is Federal premiums with the same bullet. Shoots right at 3000 fps and I have killed deer from 15 yds to 300+ and none of them have gone 40 yds. We recently picked up some Berger VLD in 115 to try but havent loaded any yet. The 115 Nosler Ballisic tips shoot well too but I am not a fan of them ... We all shoot the 117 grain Sierra's as well - this is our favorite Mule Deer/Antelope round, and we have also used it to take elk when the scope on my .270 broke during the season. Congrats on a great gun

Thanks for all the input.
I picked up some Hornady 117 gr BTSP. My scope comes in today. I can't wait to get it out to the range.

Try different types of ammo. Most likely It'll like some and not others.
I'd stay away from the Balistic tips for deer. The ammo that I've found shoots well in most guns that I've used is Remington Core Lokt. and Hornady Custom. 100 or 117/120 gr. bullets will both do well. Go with whatever is most accurate in your gun.

I hand load 110 gr Accubonds and love them. Great performance on game thus far and lights-out accuracy. I firmly believe in a bonded bullet when shooting a smaller caliber like the .25-06. I also like the 120 gr. Nosler Partitions. Federal loads them.
I have not been all that impressed with the performance of the core-lokts. They definitely expand, but they tend to damage a fair amount of meat and break apart. I also personally would not use the ballistic tips for pigs and larger deer like Axis in the .25-06.
Just my $.02.

Do yáll think 100 grain is too light for deer?
What do you think of 120 grain accubond 100 grain bullets will definetly do the trick. I've taken many hogs and deer with 100 gr. Corelokts. Some have been shoulder shots on big boars and they dropped in their tracks. All my kills have been either no tracking or easy tracking. It just depends on what you want. 100 grain bullets will give slightly less recoil if you ever let your wife or kids hunt with it. 117 or 120 gr. bullets will cary more energy downrange. If you ever plan on shooting further than 300 yds. I'd consider the 117 or 120 gr. variety. I loaded up some 117 gr. Sierra Gamekings for mine. Shot the first 3 shot group yesterday with all three touching. I've read good reviews about this bullet so I'm gonna give it a try. I'm not worried about tearing up meat. I'm looking for accuracy. If I get concerned about tearing up meat then I'll just take a head or neck shot. Pick a good bullet that you can shoot very accurately. I think accuracy is way more important than the type of bullet you're shooting as long as the bullet is designed for hunting. I'll be the first to admit that the parition is probably a better bullet than the Core-Lokt but the Core-Lokt is what my gun shoots best as far as accuracy goes. So that's what I've hunted with in the past.
