I passed up some shooter bucks 2nd weekend of the season and I haven't seen anything close to being a shooter at my place in Cuero
This morning I saw 1 deer and it was an 8 pointer with a 16.5" spread and I was able to take that buck. I saw a lot of deer moving (mainly does) so it should be a good last week of the season. Sit in the stand and see what happens. You'll never know what you'll see unless you're out there

I have had miserable luck this year. I started hunting again in 1998 and this is the first season that I have not as yet killed anything. It is not that I have passed up anything legal to shoot. In the county that I have had access to hunt this year, does can only be taken during Thanksgiving weekend and they also have antler restrictions. Saw plenty of does before Thanksgiving and plenty at night (while not hunting). Saw nothing during Thanksgiving. Saw several mature bucks, but they had tall, but narrow racks - not legal to shoot, but they can live to produce plenty of other tall narrow rack bucks. Go figure the logic in that! Tons of acorns still on the ground and no rain til last week. Field where we planted winter wheat and rye just barely came up due to no rain. Only thing coming to feeders is crows. The season there ends this weekend and I am going to give it a try again Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, but I am not optimistic about seeing a legal deer to shoot. First time I have ended a season with an empty freezer. Antlers are nice, but I would have been very happy with just meat. You fellows that can pick and choose what you want to shoot are very fortunate!

No question that I've seen more deer this season that any before, but haven't taken one yet. I'm seeing lots of doe, which leaves me wishing I had taken one when I could have during the early part of the season. I've seen a lot of bucks too, but none that met the 13-inch rule. And I've seen some excellent young bucks with racks that should be great in years to come.
Still, I have no complaints as long as I keep seeing lots of deer.
We also had the largest buck ever taken on our lease this year, and it was completely by luck that it happened. As so often happens, the guy shot it while hunting another guy's stand. Go figure.

The 10 pointer I just took on 12/27 was the latest hunt and latest buck of the season in my short years as a hunter.

I hunt in Houston County where you can take doe from the first day of the season until the Sunday after Thanksgiving. I believe you can also shoot them during the muzzleloader season that runs the week after the close of the general season. I didn't take one earlier because many of the guys that I hunt with were taking them. Now I'm not sure they took enough of them. But then, several of these same guys will be hunting during the muzzleloader season.

A few years back I was in my stand on the last day of the season. The last hour of daylight here comes this buck. Was glad I stuck it out. My BIL had already gotten back to camp, packed everything up, and was ready to leave when i pulled up with this buck in the bed of the truck.
