I am thinking about getting a lease in southern Red River county. Can anyone tell me about the hunting there. What is the deer population and quality like? Turkey? Hogs? etc. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Deer hunting can be OK. My neighbor has a place north of Clarksville and they shoot a deer or 2 every year. Some years none though. I think most of the turkeys are still up along the Red. There are hogs I know another guy that has 60 acres near Bagota and he has no problem shooting hogs.

I hunt in north Red River County and havent seen one hog in 3 years of owning the place. The turkey and deer population is decent with the deer mostly being doe, but two years ago i shot a 135 8pt but havent seen anything close since. Its also tough hunting with the deer having more acorns than they know what to do with so little feeder action. Its always a surprise and i love hunting out ther. Hope that helps ya out.

Lots of good East Texas woods between the Sulphur and the Red. If ya look on a good map or google earth you can see that from Hopkins county east the land is relative wooded and rural. I didn't pass a chance to get on a lease in that area.
It ain't easy being me.

Along the Red, east of 271, we are seeing huge declines in deer numbers total; most think it's from overhunting/taking since the limit went from one to four deer with a rifle.
It was good a few years ago, falling fast the last 4-5

Plenty of hogs near Sulphur. Deer hunting is ok. No turkeys to speak of in southern part of the county. The duck hunting is good along Sulphur if you have some overflow land.

I agree with Sig. I have hunted Red River County for 20+ years and the last 4-5 years the numbers have went down. I have several places to hunt and the numbers are just down. In the past I could go and see at least 20 doe on a field just before dark now I am lucky to see 3. TPWD needs to look into this. Over hunting and poaching has a lot to do with it. Dont let me scare you off there is still some good deer.

Thanks for the info. It helps to get first hand information about an area. It will help me make up my mind on whether to buy land here or look somewhere else.

I hunt in Bogata and there are plenty of deer, just a bunch of does but there are plenty of bucks but a ton of cover. It's not going to south or west texas and the feeder go off and 30 deer show up. Like said before, they seldom come to my feeder durning the day but at night there taring it up. Might be one deer but a ton of tracks. But I enjoy it there. Pretty country and just two hr drive for me.
Thanks, Jigfish

My neighbors place is just a few miles from Dimple. I think their deer sightings have declined over the past couple of years. I will go back to the late 70s when certain counties in east Tx had the 4 deer rule. It almost destroyed the hunting. With the smaller acreage and may be more poaching east Tx cannot have the same harvest rules as the hill country.

Congratulations J3X...Great deer. It sounds like the area is more Hit or Miss. Is there a better area in EAST TEXAS than the Bogata-Talco area?

The Bogata area has good hunting available. My wife and I have hunted the same place for 12 years. We have shot some excellent deer on it. I took a 142 inch 10 point last year and my wife shot a 132 inch 8 point a couple years ago. I personally think it is all in the management of the land. The key would be to get a large piece of property you can manage or try to find good neighbors that want to participate in deer management. I live in the area, you can send me a PM if you have any questions.

Thanks tc5374 & BMD. The lease we are on is 700 acres of timber. It has been managed thru the LAMPS program for several years before the AR's started.Current and previous members also tried to take only mature bucks. I havent personaly met the lease holders to our east but have been told by another member that they also take only mature bucks. We are seeing good numbers of deer . My buck and another 7 point 17 1/4 wide have been taken so far this year. We have several good pics of an 8 point that is better than both of them along with several other smaller but leagal under AR's bucks.

I have a friend that owns some land along Sulphur River. I drive by it every day on my way to work, and I see a lot of deer and hogs on it. I will ask him if he would be intersted in leasing it. I've never asked to hunt it because I've always had plenty of places to hunt.

We farm about 4,000 acres all around Bogota, only saw one real good 140+ inch buck during harvest, and a lot of doe. TONS of hogs. Dont think about poaching around there though, the GW has a lot of leased land there.
