ok 308 will be a likely choice for caliber. If I had a budget of 2500 to 3000 for rifle and scope, who should I consider to buy from?

This.

I killed a deer with my .308 November 12 and rang steel at 600, 700, 800, 900, and 1000 yds on December 4.

Hand loads, and some factory ammo, will maintain super sonic speed out to 1000 with a .308 Win.

This rifle and scope were purchased from R-Guns. I couldn't be more happy with the rig, and I'm under $2000 thus far. Just something to think about. By the way when you start loading your own it'll cost you $0.43 per shot.
