I think you missed about the last third of the guy's original post. Sounds like he jumped the pond (because the day was already started) and saw nothing (but coots.) Then got down and waited and ended up shooting mallards in his face as they came in.

So basically he didn't call (don't we all hold back on that sometimes to see what happens) and didn't use decoys (haven't we heard about great hunts that didn't involve decoys because the hunters were where the ducks wanted to be) and he held still so they could come in and then busted his duck.

Sounds like duck hunting to me.

It may have started as a hopeful last minute pond jump, but if you read on, there was water, the ducks flew in, I bagged one. I left the deeks back at the house, but I don't think the duck I bagged feels un-hunted none the less.

Let me ask him... nope he got hunted. Sorry.

As some more experienced hunters here on THF have stated, "It's about knowing where the ducks want to be". Just so happened I knew where that was in a county that has had no ducks harvested since I was knee high to a grasshopper. I'm sure this pond jumping thing has been dead-horsed here before... like AR's and the Duck Truck vid. But if you want to kick it a bit more, be my guest. It will be just as dead as it was before.

What was kind of funny was spending a ton of cash on calls, deeks, rigging etc. and realizing that I could have saved the money and spent a little patience instead.

Same with deer hunting. I see a lot of money being spent to bag a deer. We spent enough money to buy 2 tanks of gas, tags, and a box of good ammo. The result was nice buck that is holding 3rd so far in the region.

In summation let me just say I've learned that its better to hunt with your brain and confidence and not so much a Visa or Mastercard.
up

Edit: Speer, I didn't see your post as I responded, but noticed it afterward. "Where the ducks want to be" I learned that by listening to the veteran hunters here on THF. Also that you don't need to always have a full boat of gear to pull off a great and memorable hunt. Dare I say, I did it right the first outing foregoing all of the bells and whistles and just, well, just hunting!
