No more good pictures, but they tell the story.
CHC might wonder how my flyfishing plans went..
I had my Kayak with me at the Ranch and I bet it really looked odd in the back of my truck because the Rancher caught me on the way out asking me what the heck was I doing with that out there. My plan had been to stop on my way home and flyfish the Llano near Junction for a day or two. Maybe find someone to shuttle me for a float trip. But this is what I found due to the rains the night before.

So I did not even stop, called my wife and said I was coming on home that night. I did divert up to Menard to check out the San Saba River and found fishable water there.

A local did warn me that the river was 5 feet over a road upstream and predicted the first surge to arrive where I was within a couple hours, so I moved my truck farther from the water. I waded upstream of that picture to a wide quiet place in the river and stood in the middle of it. Right after dark with the fish feeling the pending flood and a mayfly hatch going on, it was a fish on every cast for over 45 minutes. A mix of redbreasted sunfish and guadalupe bass. Then the fish suddenly stopped biting and over a couple minutes time I notice the water had rose from my knees to the top of my hip boots. By the time I got down river to my truck, it had risen at least two more feet, and another foot by the time I loaded up to head on to Dallas.

Atta boy John!
Congrats on a great hunt and as always, Great Pics!
It sure is some great country out there.
Our boy scout troop goes to Buffalo Trails Scout Ranch in the Davis Mountains every couple of years. Hmm? I could tell my wife I'm going with scouts, drive the screeming meenees out there then duck out for several days to hunt. Hmmm?
It's only July now and I already getting Jazzed to bow hunt my lease and apply for the TWPD lottery hunts again.

john,

did you get any good size guadalupe bass?

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

No, they were all fairly small, but still fun on a 2wt flyrod. Reminded me of trout fishing which I am headed to do in Colorado for a few starting tomorrow.
