Since I had some wild dogs(not wolves or coyotes) put me up a tree after I shot a big sow with my bow a few years back I have been carrying my Ruger GP100. Six shots that you can put whatever kind of load you want, ie. snake shot, solids or hollow points. Have not had to draw it in self defense yet but with the meth heads setting up labs out in the boonies there is always that possibility.

I think most of you guys just like to carry your pistol +1 I like how they use the if I walk up on a HOG. If you did walk up on one in the dark after you get over chit yourself you would not be able to hit it by the time it was on you anyway. I see in most cases alot of guys just like to wear them around the camp for there ego. You have a rifle that will kill anything that could get you out there Big Bad Mexicans included LOL!!!!! What I see on here is a bunch of babies scared of the dark LOL!!!!!!!!!

Why do I carry a sidearm?
1. I don't load my rifle until I'm in the stand. Climbing in and out of a stand with a loaded rifle doesn't appeal to me.
2. IF I did carry my rifle loaded I can get on target faster with my pistol than I can with a rifle at close range.
3. Because I carry one with me everywhere else I can. Why should hunting be any different?

I hunted on a bowhunting day lease off Old Mines Road, North of Laredo one time. The lease backed up to the river. The outfitter told me that if I had a hand gun, I should bring it and carry it at all times because they had constant run in with Mexicans crossing the river and stealing stuff out of camp, breaking into parked trucks and threatening hunters.
I carried a 9mm all weekend based on his advice. Never had any run ins, but I just figured better safe than sorry.
As far as walking up on a hog, I have hunted and still do hunt in as hoggy an area as you could find. I have walked up on some, but none that I needed to protect myself from. If I wanted to shoot one, the rifle in hand worked just fine.
Just wondering out loud here, if a hog were to rush you from say 20 yards, how many truly believe you can pull your pistol and kill that hog before he takes a swipe at you? And be truthful about your answer. I doubt I could and I shoot a lot.

Isn't it 20 feet that the cops consider the personal area? If someone is within 20 ft of you they can get a knife into you quicker than you can draw and fire a pistol.
At 20 yards I couldn't hit anything moving at me.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

Try a Colt 1911 Super 38. Nearly the same knock down power of a .357 with about 1/2 the weight. Plus you have 9 rounds to miss it with.

Is everyone scared of the dark or what? Hunted in hog infested areas for the past 25 yrs (a few mt lions too) and never felt the need to carry a pistol for protection. That's what the .270 is for! And to top it off I usually start my hunt with 4 rounds in my gun, not 5. That way I can just push them all down into the mag and leave the chamber empty on the way to my hunting spot. Once I get there I can chamber a round, then push them back down for the walk back. If I fire a shot, then that's one less bullet in my gun for the hunt, I don't add to it. I have never shot over over 3 times during a hunt and that was to take 2 deer and 1 hog....just sayin'. Okay, I did carry my .44 mag a couple of times but that was because I had planned on taking a hog or deer with it when I was hunting in a mott in south Tx and most shots were less than 40 yds. Just trying to be a little more sporty.

Somebody straighten me out. I had understood that it was not legal in Texas to be packing unless you have a CHL, even when hunting. I also understood that if you do have a CHL, that weapon better be concealed. In other words, you're not supposed to be wandering around a camp or the woods with a pistol strapped to your leg and such...
For the record, I am a CHL holder, but do not carry while I am hunting. Never found the need to.. Been hunting 44 years now...never crossed a situation I couldn't deal with, maybe I've just been lucky.. It seems to be a mentality thing to me...just my .02 on the issue.

If that was the case, no one could own a hand gun unless they were holding a CHL. You could be in trouble if you bought one and then carried it to your truck from the gun shop, gun show, etc. It has always been my understanding that you have to transport it stored away to the range, the lease or your house, ranch, farm or whatever. Then you can carry it how ever you want to once you get there. CHL is for carrying in public, ie., in town etc. I doubt all Cowboy Action Shooters carry permits and look how they operate. I just looked this up http://crime.about.com/od/gunlawsbystate/a/gunlaws_tx.htmRead under Carry And another. Read the second line. Sums it up pretty well. http://www.txchia.org/txcarry.htmI would have thought this would be covered when the CHL course was taken?

I would have thought this would be covered when the CHL course was taken? Thanks for the info Bobby. I don't remember them covering this in the CHL class, but it has been 3 or 4 years since I've been. For me, that might as well have been a lifetime. Mine is up for renewal in January and it is good for 10 years after that.
