Here is my situation. I have a .270 that I really like and use for deer and smaller sized game. I am retiring my 30-06 that was passed down to me from him. I want to save it for my boy when he is older.
I dont really want a 30-06, I wanted to try something different. Id want to use it some for deer as I am able to hunt them more often but I really would like it to be my elk gun.
Opinions wanted from you guys who have lots of guns and lots of knowledge. One thing I ask is to take into consideration the price, Ill want to spend 400-600 on the gun. Also the price to shoot the gun. I dont want to spend 5 bucks a round to shoot it. But if one was that much better than all others I would pony up to the counter to pay the price to shoot it. I want a good reliable shooter that will last for years, I dont have a brand preference honestly. I would most likely like a bolt action or single shot, not wanting a semi-auto.
Thanks in advance, this should be fun and educational! Bitman

mine would be a toss-up between a 257wby, 270wsm or 300wm...but all my sugeestions would be over $600.

I would go with something bigger then like a 7mm. I know where a very nice Browning A bolt 7mm Medallion is for $500. I just bought a Remington 7mm because I have two 270s and other smaller calibers

as i don't hunt elk or anything much bigger than a whitetail i would get a .257 wby mag, but thats just me.
thats also assuming i already had a .22-250

Why not an Encore in 7mm or 300 WM? If you don't like the caliber, swap for another barrel.

What about the Remington 700 series in 308? These rifles are known for being very accurate.

There is nothing wrong with the '06 unless you just don't like it.I have killed 2 elk using 180g bullets in mine and to me the '06 will kill anything I hunt.I bought a 25-06 but I havn't hunted with it yet as I bought it for deer and smaller game.

No doubt about the AR crap, just damn shame hunters don't have self control and knowledge

Reason for the .25 well at least the 25-06 less recoil then the 270 and just as hard hitting..perfect tx whitetail, antelope cartiage... while still being light recoiling. the reason i said 257 wby is just b/c is a laser and one of the hardest hitting cal out there, when you can push a 100 grains of copper over 3500ft/s you a reciepe for massige hydrostatic shock and soft tissue damage... its just a cool cal.

If I already had a 270, and was looking for a bigger gun to hunt elk with, I would go with something in 30 caliber, if cost was an influence a 300 win mag.

Why not a TC encore? Gies you the ability to add other calibers for around $200-$250 per caliber and can even be made into te pistol configuration.

From the parameters you gave, I too would recommend a Savage in 300 Win. Mag. It will give you distance and plenty of knock down power. You can get a new one for about $550. Pawn shops can be fun to poke around in if you want to also.

Guys, thanks for the input thus far!!! Im not looking for anything smaller than the 270, not sure if a 25-06 is bigger or smaller?? I would love to have a 25-06 one day when I give my 270 to my youngest!
But for now Im looking for something bigger. My main questions are whats the difference in these calibers you guys are recommending??? Like 7mm, 7mm mag, 7mm ultra mag, 300 mag, 308, ect ect.
I definitely am considering a TC!! I really like them and have heard great things about them and like the fact that they are affordable!
Keep it coming gents!

Easy one for me to answer since this is my set-up. My considerations:
1) The '06-based cartridges have all the recoil I want to handle
2) A large hole in elk is important to aide in tracking
So, I chose the .35 Whelen.

weatherby vangaurd or thompson center venture in either 300 win mag or maybe 338 win mag.
300 win mag is cheaper to shoot than the 338, but if you have a 270 to hunt deer and other simular sized critters the 338 might be a good step up for elk. just a thought.
learn something new everyday and you will have never wasted a day.

Savage 11 or 111 FCNS because you get the Accu-stock and Accu-trigger and probably in .308 because there is a lot of load data available with ammo widely available and not too expensive to shoot. It retails for $500-$550.
