The feature story on the NBC DFW 10:00 p.m. news was about the feral hogs plaguing Irving, Texas: NBC DFW news story

This ran last week:
Dallas News story

Would be nice if we could hunt them in the cities.

They've been in south Irving for many, many years. Had a buddy who liked to cook hunt with dogs at night back in the early 90's and he would occasionally run up on a hog or two.

My dad told me that the number in Texas is half a million. Thats alot of pigs. They will keep coming more into suburban neighborhoods because the habitat is good.

I've been trapping them in Grand Prairie for a couple of years now.

The hog population in Texas is waaaaaay more than half a million. 3 million is a conservative estimate.

That is alot concentrated. There are still many places in Texas that don't have hogs. So that means where they are they are thick.

My dogs caught one and brought it back to me when I was hiking near the river last summer. Thor got a nasty bite out of it. He had never seen one before. I assume he was trying to make friends. After that he spent twenty minutes trying to drown in a swampy area before herding it to me.

There wasn't much I could do with it. We let it go.

After that, they kept catching the scent, wanting to catch more. I had to drag them out on leashes.

I know there are tons under the Beltway 8 bridge going over the Houston ship chanel.

As for the one in the Stockyards.. There is a processor right up the road and he may have lost a few over the years.
