I would go for the AR-15 in 6.8 mm instead. They 6.8 is a great round but at about $1 a shot, I can't afford to shioot them 100% agree. As I talked about in the other thread, there is not enough gain over 5.56 in the 6.8 to justify the price of ammo in my opinion. 6.8 ammo is higher than .308 ammo. You get 200 more pound of energy for a couple hundred yards then they even out, then 5.56 surpasses it at long range. At the same time 308 has 900 pounds of more energy than the 6.8 at nearly every distance, and you can get 308 hunting ammo for 13 bucks at Walmart. 6.8 hunting or any ammo for that matter is running near 20 bucks a box. 6.8 in my opinion (and this is what many hog guides I know do) is for SBRing for use with a suppressor. In SBR form its a huge improvement over a SBR 556, since powder burn is more efficient.

Actually its quite a bit more than 200 pounds of energy. You know this. And not to mention the larger grain bullet. Just curious anyone one here go hunting with a 5.56 or 6.8 knowing there going to be making a 500 yd shot. Not me. Both guns are made for up to 350 yd shots where the 6.8 excels.More of a little bullet vs bigger bullet thing. Check out 68forums. Theres a lot of good information on there.

223 VS 6.8 comparision
Hornady 75 grain match BTHP 223 Muzzle 100 200 300 400 500 2790/1296 2561/1092 2344/915 2137/760 1941/627 1757/514
6.8 Hornady match Muzzle 100 200 300 400 500 2550/1588 2313/1306 2088/1065 1877/860 1680/689 1500/550
At 300 yards 150 pounds difference. I actually use 77 grains so the difference is even less. Assuming both bullets frag as designed the greater velocity of the 5.56 should even them out even more. I won't be hunting at 500 yards but I do shoot at 500 yards quite a bit.

SSA loads are a little hotter than the Hornady. Like for example the 6.8 85 gr TSX Tac. 3000/1708 at the muzzle. Cant find any long range info. And also the the 95 gr TSX will be out shortly which will be somewhat comparable to the 85 gr TSX standard load from what I hear. And good hunting ammo for the 6.8 and the 308 are comparable in price. And by good I mean SSA.

My problem with 6.8 is a total lack of plinking ammo. I am a high volume shooter, I shoot 1k rounds a month at least through my AR's. I can do this for around 200 bucks a month, the same in 6.8 would be $750-1000 a month. Thats my real problem with 6.8, is that I can shoot my AR10 for cheaper as well. Its a good round though.

I will agree with ya that a 6.8 is not a gun for a high round shooter due to not having a plinking round. And SSA is supposed to be comig out with a plinking round. And the 95 gr TSX. We have been waiting a while for both , but SSA says its coming. I like the 6.8 because of the ar platform and larger gr bullets plus I can still get a 30 rd clip. 556 is a good round but I like having more knock down at short ranges.

Tell the 43 hogs I have killed this year with and the 78 the year before that!! LULZ And most are boars over 250 pounds. Check out the pics section, just added a new one from last night. M855 does suck, but Sierra 77 OTM match (mk 262ish) is devastating. I will put my 77's against any 6.8 any day of the week. This has to be a troll account.

I'll take that dang Arab round for hogs any day of the week. All jokes aside, with soft point bullets, I believe it is the ultimate close range (200 yds or less) round for anything walking in Texas. I'm not bashing .223 by any means, but the "Arab" round is a perfect compromise as far as I am concerned...

The 39 is ballistically similar to 30-30. The 5.56 dominates it after 200 yards. Personally have not had a problem with penetration with my .223, my 77 grain OTM Sierras have all had three exit wounds each when hitting a heavy hog. I have an AK and like it though.

Yup, I agree with you totally. All of my pig hunting happens at 100 yards or less, up close in the brush, multiple shots. I like the .223 and have used it extensively, but I like the extra bit of THWACK that the 7.62 provides. That's how I always introduce my AK to people who don't know about it- it's a .30-30 that will fire 30 rounds as fast as I can pull the trigger...
