I know its too early to even consider it but I keep thinking to myself, what if I have a shot at a good buck this weekend. All of the time and money I've spent getting ready for the season to be over in a day.
Now I haven't shot a buck to this day worthy of the wall, so if I got a good legal buck I'd proudly hang it, but to think all of my hunting except for pigs was over for '10 sounds like a terrible deal. Wife doesn't eat vennison so I'm on my own to eat it and just can't get through it that fast.

isn't that why you spent all that time and money????? To shoot a good buck! why does it matter when you shoot it? First day is just as good as the last!
Spend the rest of the season shooting hogs and varmints and sleeping in on sundays.
I am going to unleash the fury of my crossbow the minute the opportunity presents itself. I crossbow hunt all season long because guns are no challenge. so if he shows up opening morning or last day, i'm launching a bolt!

I've actually been pondering on the same question. This is my first lease in Rock Springs, Tx and I've heard that you never know what is going to walk out in that area with a low fence. I would really like an axis but a big white tail buck is tempting as well. Most people would say kill both but I have limited freezer space. These are lifes questions I like thinking about!

lol, to answer the OP....yes, I think about that a lot, which is why in a 1 13"+ buck county (disregard spike option) it will have to be one heck of a buck for me to shoot it during bow season. I ended my season yr before last the second weekend in Nov and it was awful....I went from hunting to babysitting my wife after that. The upside to it was I had plenty of time to take kiddos hunting toward the end of season.

nope. If I see a true shooter to me I will have no regrets. Its also the benefit of hunting a 2 buck county.

Last year my season was over within the first hour of archery season...on THAT lease. Fortunatly I had another place to go for Whitetails (first was a Mule Deer). It did feel a little strange though, knowing I was done for that county in less than one hour hunting.

i shot my biggest buck two years ago the second weekend of november. it was kind of nice not to have the stress of wondering when and if the big one would walk out. i went to my stand and enjoyed the scenery.

I think about this all the time. I love being in the stand with the option of killing a big buck if he walks out. If I kill one the first morning then what? I can still kill my does and hogs but no option for another trophy. But I have passed on deer in the past the first few weeks and then never had a shot again. Coulda, shoulda, woulda. It is going to be hard but if a shooter comes out I am going to take it, I think!

Nope, a trophy is a trophy regardless of what day he shows himself.

Not at all....to me, getting a trophy anytime during season is icing on the cake. If I lucky enough to get one this weekend, I could sleep in and chill at camp the whole rest of the season if I wanted too and not feel bad at all about doing it.

No sir.. But what always is a killer is shooting a trophy deer opening morning, then watching a bigger trophy the next morning...
All in all, never pass on a deer opening morning that you would kill on the last hunt... But it can still come back and bite you in the arse.
Good luck to all my fellow bowhunters!!
Wife has always wanted some Hard 8

Not me. The sooner the better. Duck season is coming. Not to mention a couple of out of state trips.

That's how I want to start off my season. I'd be happy popping two bucks right off the bat and pull out my long bow for the rest of the season. Besides I'm going to hunt Oklahoma for a week first of Nov and I've seen some monsters there the two times I hunted there..

I kill early, I don't have near the excuses to make the drive from SA to East Tx. I'de be happy if all my trophy bucks were killed on the last day of season.

I'll be thrilled to death if I have 1 legal buck that's not a baby walk in front of me at my place from now until January.
So would I shoot 1 if he walks out Saturday morning? Without thinking twice.

the state of texas allows us hunters to have 5 tags to be used on whitetail deer. if i can shoot a good buck the first morning i am slinging carbon. that still leaves me with 4 more tags to fill.
I have found that diversity adds balance to things. And thats why i shoot a diversity of animals. so i can bring balance to my freezer

Nope - hope I am lucky enough to stick one of the three bucks on my hit list. Will let that arrow fly in a heartbeat!

Another drawback to AR counties. You could always shoot a respectable buck and then hold out for that true trophy. Not anymore in my county.

When a buck bigger than any you have on the wall shows himself, this question will be thrown out the proverbial window.
First of season, last of season, it makes little difference - shoot first, ask questions later.
