I have several rifles, but the one I always seem to use in my old Smith & weston 30.06. I've had it forever and always puts them down.

The answer to the OP for best all around deer caliber would have to be the 06, just for the versatility of the old round and the availability of the ammo.
If you were out of shells you could probably walk any pasture and find an 06 catridge that someone had dropped on the ground years back, they've been around so long, and the only beer joint in the backwater town would have a dusty box behind the counter on the shelf.
The .243 would be second for the same reasons!

If I had only one gun to choose with all the shells I could carry, just a plain ole 22. It can kill anything you want, its all in the placement. An for you boys that think it doesnt shoot far enough, well hell no it dont. Thats why you learn to track in an get a close shot. Think about it, you could last longer if you had to hunt to survive.

I hunt East Texas and love my .270 with a scope but I have taken a lot of deer with my old Winchester model 97 lever action open sight 30/30, which I still have.

Have a guy that's going to set up on top of a mesa and use one this year. We're setting him a minimum of 1200 yards. Should be some interesting shooting. I expect to see quite a few hogs falling over and maybe a doe or two.
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.
