my .02, the vets that say the dogs don't need the vac. either don't have it to give or don't have enough hunter customes to warrant the ordering.

well I really don't have an answer as to why all the vets are telling you the vaccine is no needed. I will tell you this. A full dose of rattler venom anywhere in thr torso will kill a dog without the vaccine. Just because a dog go bit does not mean they have recieved a full dose of the venom. Full dose- dead dog. If your calling city vets that have never worked on dogs in the hunting industry then what can I say. I don't like most vets. My vet moved to Wisconsin and I have yet to find a replacement. It is bard to find a good vet. When you find one stick with him. If you want my advice take it, if not stop reading. Any vet who tells you the vaccine is not needed, ask him to turn around so you can kick his arse out the door.
I'm definitely not trying to argue here...I don't claim to know anything about poisonous snakes. The vet I used for the rabies vaccine is about 55 yrs old and claims to have been a vet for a long time, and claimed to have worked in an emergency room for quite a while in the southern part of the start where bites were common. He seemed genuine and I had no reason to disbelieve the advice he gave me. The other vet I called was up in Aubrey, so they were definitely located outside of the immediate Dallas area. The other vet was more down toward the city. I'll do some more calling around tomorrow and see if there is anyone around who can give the snake vaccine.

Rockwall is a ways from you but they normally have the shot. Those guys (and gal) are the best team of vets I have ever encountered. If they tell me to do it regardless of what it is I do.

My former "city" vet told me that there was no such thing as a snake vaccine. My "country" vet told me that my city vet sucked. That is why he is now my former "city" vet.
BTW, Wayne gave my dog his first vaccine and appears to have also squashed my dog's snake curiosity. Thanks again Wayne.

Tell ya what call Dr. Aycock in Lewisville he is the leading authority on gun dogs and ask him his opinion. He has people from all the country bring they're dogs to him and is the best IMO. Will the shot save your dog NO will it buy you more time to get to the vet vet YES. Do a search on maggiem here on the forum and you will see the damage a rattlesnake can do in fact I will go back and find it for you. They spent alot of money and months of recovery to save they're lab and most of the damage would have been less had she gotten the dog it's shot

Try the Mckinney animal hospital off White and 75. David Esslinger is the vet and a great guy and avid hunter. Ask him about this subject and he will change your mind. Good luck

Maybe any advice other than the obvious, like ice the wound, use a venom extractor, or something along those line. Even still, after that you would obviously take you dog to the vet. curious, should you use these methods on dogs? dr's say not to do these when humans get bit. Friend got bit by a cottonmouth, almost died. The folks in ER told us what saved her life was the venom extractor we used. They put one in every ambulance after that. Poisonous snake bites are fairly common in our part of the state.

And the fact of the matter is, is no matter what level your dog is trained to or not trained to, your gonna take them home, feed them, and their gonna lay on the floor and lick their butt.

Sounds like you have gotten enough suggestions as far as clinics, but the clinic I have worked for carries it too. It is in North Garland....Let me know if the other clinics do not pan out for you and I will give you the number and name of the clinic I work for.
I believe Aycock endorses the vaccine...I have heard him talk about it on other forums....Just call and ask his clinic to make sure

Dr. Aycock saved a Pointer owned by a friend who had been treated for weeks by another vet with no results. I would trust his opinion on anything related to a gun dog.

1 mg per pound for benadryll. That's what my regular vet and dermo specailist prescribed for my dog for bad allergies and hot spots. Dogs can take benadryll in much stronger doses than humans. That ratio would kill a human. Like mentioned above.... don't know how good it would do for snake bite, but it will not hurt the dog by giving him that much benadryll.

Thanks for all of the replies. I got my dog the second half of his snake shot tonight. My vet told me it covers rattlesnakes and water moccasins, but not copperheads. He said regardless, if your dog gets bit, with or without the vaccine you should bring him/her in to be evaluated.
Good luck tomorrow morning. First hunt on my new lease near Honey Grove and I'm excited about the unknown. Birds will be a bonus.

I'll take a Black Female every time.

Keep Benadryl on hand. If the dog has had the shot it will help neutralize the venom's effects (some) but still needs to be taken to the vet. If the/a dog is bit, pop a Benadryl down its throat & haul it to the vet. Head is one of the best places to get tagged, better then an extremity or body.
I have even had to stuff a Benadryl down one of the barn cats when he was tagged & his paw was 3 times the size it should have been, he slept it off & was fine.

Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.
