I've used both metal & composite funnels. Prefer the metal ones. Build all my feeders using Moultrie Pro Hunter feeder with the animal guard and solar charger. Had problem with coons biting the line from charger to the feeder. Fixed that problem by using flexible metal tube to run the solar/battery line thru.

I have 5 feeders and put them in all of them after having mold corn problems on the bottom of the drum for a couple of years. Screw then to the drum and you will not have any issues.

varmit cage..perferably homemade I like my feeders to have a funnel & put the motor on the inside upside down with a rod going to the spinner through the funnel. This is the way feeders used to all were built before the external motor/ battery combos emerged. Call me old school, but I have had better luck with this set up to keep coons from ripping wires, cages, & solar panels off. I swear coons run around the woods with a pair of pliers & wire cutters on a destruction mission!

The metal ones are nice when you cut the bottom of your barrel out and mount the funnel lower. Adds capacity.
