Can't tell for sure from the angle of the photo, but I do not believe that is a venomous snake. Just a very good actor.

I don't know professor, I thought any snake with a triangle shaped head was venomous. Evidently, the person in the picture, never saw the post on here about the rattlesnake bite and the aftermath. No way in heck I would be that close.

If it is a rat snake then it will be a dead rat snake,any snake with the traingle shape head is poisonous to me,talk about a heart attack scene.

I agreeeeeee, DEAD SNAKE. I just back from walmart and bought some .22LR shells with #16 shot in it for my hunting trip this weekend.... I am going to call my .22 the "snake charmer" this weekend

Gents - do a google on cotton mouth click images then do it for rat snake. I've seen lots of snakes. Yep, that looks like a black rat snake or even a common water snake. But that snake has a triangle head. No question! There is no way I would have picked up that snake.  If it's not a cotton mouth there has been some cross breeding. Every rat snake I have seen has a smooth head and is no where near triangle. Unless, the rat snake uses that triangle pose to mimic a poisonous snake it looks like a viper to me. Any more pics? Did you take pictures of the under side after you killed it?

Not only will they flare their head to look like a rattler they'll also try and rattle their tail in the leaves to sound like one.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Not an expert, but I would have to agree...that doesn't look it any of the rat snakes I have killed.

I run into alot of snakes in the river bottoms and I new for a fact immediately that this was a non-venomous snake. If you see enough snakes the venomous ones are not hard to recognize. I played with him for a while then let him go. I will be honest though he scared the sh** out of me because I was just about to put my foot down and I looked down in the grass and saw this fella. They do flare there heads out and rattle there tails to seem more dangerous. This fella was harmless, he was still real slow to coming out of his winter nap. Hope yall enjoyed the pics.

You do wear snake proof boots i hope.You would think with all the hogs running loose the snake population would decrease but i don't think that's the case.Do you tramp thru the woods to take pics ?.

You would think, John, but, around here at least, we've not had a cold winter in so long that there's plenty for the hogs to eat year 'round...so they'll turn down a meal they have to run after.  Some green leaves stay on the willow oaks around here until it's time for spring buds. Then they fall off. We need a winter or all hell's gonna break loose.
