So in my situation having a buddy with a normal outboard and sea ark that we can take if conditions are dangerous or a shallow engine isnt needed affects my decision on what to get....I should have mentioned that in the original post.

I had liked what i read about jet drives online (and by that i mean the yamaha and mercury websites...so obviously they werent gonna make them sound bad. The biggest problem i hear about the jet drive is that is sucks stuff up and clogs up the motor, but is this a common problem?...seems like if it was then no one would buy them. I am not at all opposed to a mud just curious about the jet drives.

Thanks again for the help on this topic

If you hunt North Texas water and have a buddy with an outboard set up, 100% go with the mud motor. Which one depends on your taste and will have many more opinions than on this thread. My suggestion would be to go test drive each one to see which you like.

The best advice after owning several mud motors is to buy a hull matched to the motor. There is nothing more frustrating than a mud motor on a commerically made hull meant for an outboard. My .02!

You dont see MANY jet drives, at least I dont. I've been on them a few times and while I was on them we never had to unclog them. There was that one time when the fuel line popped off and we lost power at WOT going through a narrow twisting bayou. I never thought I'd see a lab fly...

BTW Pro Drive is where its at.

wouldn't waste my time with that... If your that worries about being that shallow go back to the king of shallow and dry land.....AIR Boat.. Those are just to much fun on the coast but hella scary at night in open water....Pray your don't loose power scared

Why? Because of the extra weight in back? I guess you could get swamped easier...

loose power and you will get swamped from behind(airboat wise).

Also you put that floundering engine on the back of your boat, your going to draft more. hell 90 percent of places at the coast you can anchor and walk in... the other places are just taking the airboat and doing short cuts more or less

i like to have a mud motor but personally think it would be cheaper to toss a yak or prog in you boat and do it that way

second when discussing wind as duck hunters we are not in any boat designed to go through big waves. Not a jon boat, doesnt matter what is powering it. Period. If you have a strong north wind you plan for it. You launch and hunt where you can safely go in your boat. A mudd motor can actually be a friend in these situations because you can grab the bank, and go. You do not need to be focused on a boat lane etc.

That being said I have some friends with an alum rig set up for bass fishing that can straight run through skinny water. Can it get where a mudd boat can? No. But it has jack plate tilt trim, and was built to run skinny. IE batteries moved to the front. Weight distribution is a huge part of it.

Also Moose when you said "I know boats, Judd. I know what hull designs do what."
i think you were implying Judd doesnt. Believe it or not Judd knows boat designers, he has riden in a few, he could walk up to the owner of the last American made, and owned company sit down bs and walk around the plant. So Judd knows boats too.

I know that Judd knows boats, wasn't trying to imply that he doesn't.

From the original post, I thought the guy wanted help with "duck boats." I didn't know his buddy already had an outboard.

If his buddy already has one, get a mud boat.

I think they are cool, I just think they are special purpose.

If Barney has owned a bunch of airboats and mudboats, then I defer to him on which one to get.

By the way, ducknbass, you must have a really long arm.

To be able to give Judd a reacharound every day from Farmers Branch is pretty impressive.

As far as finding someone to work on it...it is a commercial lawn mower motor. You can take it to any lawn mower shop.

Not so much.........tell them it's a boat motor and they balk OR they agree to work on it BUT you have to take the motor off the boat! Been there done that! Took me a whole day to find some place that would even agree to look at it. Just got lucky, it was the 'off season" and dead of winter so there where hurting for work!

I think Judd just tells his wife he's leaving, which must be nice.

I don't have that trick in my bag anymore, but I'm happy.

Plus, I don't hunt public on the weekends.

Are you really turning down a trip to Ray Bob for some deep water, potential lunker bass fishing to play golf?

Dude, no offense, but you don't look like a golfer.

I've got a few spots that come alive when it 100 degrees and windy.

Judd SENT ME A PICTURE of a ProDrive, it's purchase is still unconfirmed.

He's also progressing fast on the call.

There is no doubt that he's light years ahead of most guys who are just starting out.

Let's go to Taywok, IDC.

I think they have the best overall design. They also drive more like a tiller outboard than other MM's. So yes PD is the best out there!

WOW, I go to lunch and you jokers start throwing punches...I like it.

Moose, you are right we are both hardheaded and it normally don't matter and you know I like you but there isn't any other way to put it but you are talking out of your *** bud. My PD (yes, mark it confirmed BTW) will do anything your WE will do and more. I did the research I know and most importantly I have at least been in a mud boat.

I'm not gonna say PD is the best out there and I own one. But their customer service and owner reminded me of BassCat's and I am used to a certain level of service and wouldn't be happy if I don't get it. Their reverse is different than other folks and it was better for me.

Go ride in them and see which one is the best for you. Right now it seems the GT and PD are the two on top though and those two and an Excel/Mudbuddy were the only 3 I looked at.

I'm a Go-Devil guy myself. Boat and motor built for each other.

Floatation in the front deck and two sides. Vanguard 35hp surface drive that can be worked on at any lawnmower shop. 10doz deeks, three guys, open throttle, 16mph by gps. 20ft in length, and wide body makes for a good lake running boat. Poling platform for chasing reds on the coast.

Not to mention go-devil is a partner for Delta Waterfowl. banana
