Depends on how they are doing it. Years back in Kansas they were hunting them down with Greyhounds (no, not the bus). Nowadays, some folks are putting a dog out as bait and hoping the dog makes it back to them before the coyotes get it.
I think I would just prefer to call them in.

That sounds more like hunting dogs with coyotes.

no my friends in pa use the dogs to hunt them most of the time the coyote is dead when they catch up to the dog it is a special breed cant think of the name right now...but using the dogs as bait i dont know about that i wouldnt do that...i have heard that people use to use kittens for muskie and large fish bait because of the thrashing and meowing any thing distressed i guess will bring a predator in or at least spark curiosity of other animals

Hunting a coyote with a dog just seems kinda weird to me. I guess it's because you're hunting a dog with a dog

I've seen it on Youtube and its always been greyhounds that are using. It's amazing to see how fast greyhounds can chase down a coyote.

When I was a kid I knew some guys that ran coyotes with greyhounds and Irish Wolfhounds.
Pretty cool to see them over take one.

I saw a video of such a few years ago at the Cabela's in Buda, TX. But I don't know anyone that has done it.
We do have some Great Pyrennese dogs that I have seen chase down and really tear into some coyotes. They got a hold of a bobcat once and tore it up too. But no, we were not out there purposefully running yotes with dogs. These dogs are out there all the time making patrols on the property and trying to keep coyotes under control. They have never messed with the exotics.

they used to hunt coyotes with dogs near goldsmith years ago. funny story here. my friend rode with them one day and told me this story. the hunters would ride around in old beat up trucks with their dog boxes in the back. when they would spot a coyote they would open the doors and let the chasers out. they would take off in pursuit of the coyote and the truck would follow where ever they went. once the chasers had the coyote stopped and bayed, they would pull up in the truck and let the big kill dog out to finish the job. well anyway, the hunters kept bragging about their big kill dog about how tuff and mean he was. the first coyote they caught they got up there and released the kill dog, they told my friend, now watch this. the kill dog busted through the pack of barking dogs to get to the coyote. he then ran up to the coyote, mounted it,and started humping. my friend said he never laughed so hard in all his life.

Working coyotes with dogs is a thing that i will never forget, i too was raised up in western ok. ejecting greyhounds out of dog boxes mounted on the top rail of a pickup. I recently had the chance to watch a pair of decoy dogs work a pair of yotes. I was amazed how these two big playful dogs worked those yotes.chasing and being chased back and forth, about the time you thought that yote was gone the man that was working the dogs would signal his dogs and they would turn and come toward us and the yote was following right behind them,I was having so much fun watching all this i didnt even want to raise my rifle. I assure you those two dogs were enjoying the hunt and chase game as much as we were.

Night hunted yotes with grey hounds at a place called "the bunkhouse" up around Post (I think) in 04. It was some intense stuff. I'd love to do it again.

Hunting coyotes with decoy dogs is the becoming more popular. There is a guy named Tony Tebbe, that some here may know. He does it and posts on another forum about his hunts with Gunner, the decoy dog. He has even mounted a camera on Gunner's side, so you can watch the hunt in first person view(or first dog view). I tell you what, I wouldn't want to be a coyote and have that dog after me. He gets plum mean on those yotes, lol.
Mmmm Hmmm

Hunting coyotes with hounds has been around for years. My Great Grandfather started the South Texas Wolf Hunters Assoc. back in the 1920's. It got to be such a huge event that TIME and LIFE magazines sent reporters down in to cover the event in 1936. I have a copy of the Dec. 7, 1936 edition on LIFE of the meet. The meet was held on the Storey Ranch at Cotulla, TX. At that time, the ranch had 80,000 acres in it. The dogs used were running walkers, julys and goodmans primarily. These are the foxhound type dogs that you see with the folks riding horses and wearing little red coats. Until the TV became so popular, all of the ranch folks owned a pack of hounds and they would gather at a pre-determined location, build a big fire and turn the hounds loose. All of the family members participated and brought along their bedrolls. They would listen to the hounds run and sccialize until going to bed. I have attended a few of these hunts and really enjoyed it. We did not have a predator problem as folks took care of them. Adios, Gary

My family was into raising racing greyhounds many years back. We had some good dogs that had won some championships across the US.
I remember as a kid training the young grey-hound pups with live rabbits (back when it was legal!). Now that was something to see. A pen that was long & straight like a barrel, the dogs going nuts, and then the guy would pull the rabbit (imported jack rabbits from Australia) out of the cage by the ears and shake it.. The sound that rabbit made would make the dogs erupt! Then they would let the rabbit go, and the stupid rabbits would always run straight down the center of the pen. Only one time did I ever see a rabbit stop, turn 90 degrees, and then right through the barbed-wire fence. One time in about 10 years of training. Normally the rabbit would run as fast as it could, and the dogs would literally run it down, then play tug of war with the body. It looked like a 727 over-taking a Ford Pinto. They were that fast!
After some of the dogs retired, we would bring them home as pets as opposed to euthanizing them. Once they are bred to run-they always want to run! I remember taking them down to the woods and letting them run flat out on the soft sand. They could go from zero to what seemed like 50 in seconds! They knew that when I took the leash off, that it was time to run. They would stand beside me until I clapped my hands and then they would take off. They would always stop at the end of the trail, and then come running right back at me at full speed. I remember having to dive out of the way many times to avoid being run over by them. They are very well mannered pets. Very protective as well. Great guard dogs. We never had a bad grey-hound as a pet.
I can imagine that they could easily run down a coyote if it was in open territory. They need open space to reach max speed. They can actually run so fast that they can't turn quickly. They are the top-fuel dragsters of the dog world. Not much for fast turns, but everything in the straight away.
If anyone ever wants a loyal, family, guard dog-adopt a retired racing grey-hound. Many groups across the nation work to place retired, or injured, racing dogs with families. Most are simply put-down (as they call it in the business) which is a shame.
A hog is nothing more than a bullet receptacle.

I have seen greyhounds get released on a coyote near Lawton Oklahoma when I was goose hunting. The coyote stands no chance and they kill it before the handler gets there. Apparently the locals up there pay this guy for each coyote he kills if they call him out. They call him when they see one and he comes. Saw him driving back by us several times during the day with a truck full of greyhounds.

Gary did you every go to any of the wolf hunts around Gillett, Tx.

yanta61 I dang sure did. Proably was not supposed to have been there as I was supposed to be in school. I would go down there and camp with August Timmerman from Hondo, Wallace and Rodger Koehler from Seguin. I loved visiting and meeting all of the Old Timers, it is a dying breed. I still run into a few of the old S. TX. Wolf Hunters from time to time. Most of them are still hunting hounds but chasing other game that does not range so far. I would love to find out who has the photo albums from the meets, as they would be worth a lot to me. Adios, Gary
