Been hunting with pistols for a long time my personal choice is the Ruger Blackhawk in either 44mag or 45 Long Colt with the 45 being #1. I favor barrel lengths of 5-1/2 to 7-1/2 with the 7-1/2 carried in a cross draw holster. Corbon ammo is about as good as it comes when choosing hunting ammo and I highly recomend it, with the 45LC I always like the convertable models giving the option of shooting 45 ACP's. I don't use scopes but thats just a personal choice.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

I like a double action.. have a Ruger Super redhawk in .44 mag with a scope and a S & W 686 in .357 mag without scope. Either works for texas deer or hogs.

Not sure yet. One of the guys at McBride's where I picked it up from suggested NOT getting a high dollar heavy scope as they tend to slide when pistol is fired no matter how much you tighten them. Just looking around right now.

My fifteen year old son has taken an interest in hunting with handguns. This spring, he shot two hogs with my Para 13/45.

Yup, my 12 year old wants to do the handgun hunting thing as well..he's been shooting my GP-100, took his first animal with it (hog) last year, so now he's hooked.

Thanks, gave him knuckles for ya. I was mistaken on the date, it was in '08 (he was 10-1/2 at the time). Got him with my dad's old duty weapon, Colt Trooper Mk III 4" .357 Mag...here's the pic..

Sorry, don't mean to thread-jack y'all.

Good choice. As you can see I'm kinda partial to that modle also. That's the truth about the scope. I'm about to take mine off and go iron sights with her.

I have variable scopes on 4 of my hunting handguns, a 44 mag., 454 Casull, 460XVR and Encore 30-06. I have never had a problem with any of my scopes sliding in the rings. You need to be sure and use quality rings and mount the scope "properly" and use locktite on all screws and you should be OK.

I would definitely recommend a variable scope, 3x7 over a 2x or 4x. The scopes do not have to be the most expensive on the market either. I have a Nikon, Leupold, Burris and Simmons. All variables and have never had any problems with any of them.

A drop Loctite on the inside of the bottom of each scope ring doesn't hurt either.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

Cool, thanks. I do appreciate all the input. Like I said, I have zero experience with this topic so I'll take in all the advice I can get. I was digging in my stock of "junk" and found a never used or even mounted Simmons shotgun scope and thought about it but decided to get the right scope for this. I will let y'all know what I decide on if I decide anytime soon.

Say Outdoor Texan, I would recommend a good 240 grain JHP bullet in that 44 mag for deer and if you are going to hog hunt, I would use a 240 grain solid type bullet as the JHP will not give as good of penetration on hogs but is great for deer.

I would have to say a Ruger super Redhawk with a 9" barrel stainless in 44mag with a leupold scope.

Encore or Contender. Just swap barrels to change calibers. Doesn't get any better than that.
