the place we hunt on now is in southern Duval County, I took my regular 4x8ft hog trap from the hill country down there and can't catch anything in it. we've certainly got hogs. we see and shoot them all the time. but they won't trap. at least not in that trap they won't. we used to catch lots of hogs in it in the hill country.

anybody got any advice??

also any recommendations on building a big trap? something that might catch a bunch of hogs at one time? i thought about putting panels around a feeder and making a trap-door. anybody have any luck with this? or any recommendations?

thanks

Erich

put your 4 x 8 trap next to or under your feeder....then turn off your feeder and put a lot of corn in the trap....if the pigs are hungry they go in the smaller trap if not give it a day or two

or you could try and build a figure 6 or tear drop or round trap with a sliding door.....they will all work just depends on what you want to build.

Yea I would reccomend a figure six trap with saloon doors or a drop door and put something attached to the door to where if they put pressure on it or step on it it will set the door off. I have tried to put a door where they push it open and go in and ive had better luck with a trip door.

THis is how we set up our trap. We have set it 3 times and caught pigs twice with this set up. We keep the feeder running all the time with the trap left open. When we show up to hunt we just set the trap and catch pigs.

yeah i agree that part of the problem is that we don't have feed in the trap often enough for them to get used to going into it. i hesitate to set the trap directly under my feeders though since i think that would effect my deer hunting at those feeders. i do though have a spare deer feeder that i'm not using. maybe i'll just set it up somewhere to the side and make it a hog trapping place.

we put feed in the trap every time we're there, but it doesn't have a feeder on it that sprinkles some corn in it daily. maybe having that feed there regularly will make the difference.

This feeder is only for hogs and we hunt deer at other feeders. If you see we made a make shift funnle out of some plastic and the corn falls straight down so the hogs have no choice but to go inside.

Good luck

I built a double drop door like the ones you see at tractor supply. I would suggest making the corral as big as you can afford as mine is a little small and they tend to tear it up. I've caught 4 at a time in it. The feeder is set just like the deer settings but I pin the doors up when I'm not there to get them used to going in. As soon as I pull in the gate I go set the trap.

Here is an unfinished version but you get the idea.

ive always set my 4x8 trap up and lock the door open and put soured corn in it pretty regularly. But none around the outsides. I have found that if you put too much outside, they wont go in. Ever since i started only putting it in the trap and not setting the trap to trigger they get used to the trap and will go in and out freely..Then when i set it..i just about always get one. They will keep coming back too because they are used to the trap. If it sets off everytime they are around it, then it scares them away. Thats just my 2 cents. Im new to this forum.

The idea behind the double door and the angle is to be a root gate. When others are inside theyre buddies can root the door open and get in. I would suggest putting a solid piece of metal on the outside of the root gate for them to push on. I dont know that they like to root the cattle panel.

I set it to trip by using a 2x4 cut in half and a hinge screwed on it. A couple trip wires to the center and attach to the 2x4, it will fold like a wallet once they get in and hit the wire.

i'll be down on the place over memorial day weekend coming up. i'm going to get the trap moved to a little different spot and corn it up. i'm also going to get a spot cleared up to build the corral trap. hopefully be able to do a little successful trapping this year. with all the rain we've really been seeing a lot of them.

Erich, id try baiting it on a daily basis if you can for a couple of weeks or so before you actually set that trap to catch one. Just wire the door open or something. Get those hogs coming around and not being afraid of it. Then spring it on them and you should catch them all the time..That is..if they are around there and you have the patience to wait a couple of weeks before getting a hog. I got this tip from and old timer a few years back and it has worked great for me. I never move my trap anymore, and almost always get one when i set it....But it does help that the area im setting it is absolutely loaded with hogs..and probably sees no pressure whatsoever from hunters other than us in a 10 mile radius.
