So I inherited this Model 70 from my grandfather and I've recently starting shooting it but am having problems with the scope mount. It's a sliding side mount scope but it interferes with the iron sights and is unable to slide far enough back for the set screws to meet their grooves. I want to be be able to leave the rear iron sights on and have the ability to slide the scope on and off when needed. The pics should make this clear, the problem. Anyways, does anyone know where I could find a replacement side mount that would either raise the scope, move the set screw mounts further forward or both? Or how might I go about having one machined perhaps? Thanks for the help, and feel free to stipulate the value of the gun (for curiosity sake). Info and pics below: Winchester Model 70 Caliber: .257 Roberts Serial #: 7xx Mfg year: 1936 If for whatever reason the pics don't work, they can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/23900803@N04/sets/72157623834777975/

That looks like a griffin and howe side mount. You might contact them to see if they have rings that will raise the scope above the rear sight. www.griffinhowe.com is their web site...I dont see another way to do it.

I would say that right there is a Gem! Family History. great caliber, classic vintage scope set-up, major $$$$

After looking at the pictures more. The gun has already been drilled and tapped for that side mount. I would remove the peep sight (fill the holes with proper filler screws) when I wanted to use the scope and if I wanted to use the peep remove the scope. Its a classic for sure the way it is setup.

I would love to see a profile pic of the left side of this gun. Are there any markings on the mount? What power and make is that scope?

Hey Rusty, I think you have pointers drooling all over his keyboard. I have a friend that has a model 70 from 1943 that has the griffin and howe side mount but it has levers that tighten the top of the mount to the bottom instead of studs like yours. Yours might be a different brand but I bet its G&H that is an earlier model or someone has modified. In any case thats a very cool setup....Bill

It would kill the period look but you could put a weaver or picatinny base on it, and then use a removable peep and a quick release scope rings.
She was only a whiskey maker, but he loved her still.

So after y'all started talking about the mfg of the scope I took it off and looked over the scope and mount and can't find any markings of any sort except for arrows on the knobs denoting the directions. Unless there are markings on the barrel facing side of the mount I'm left to the experienced for identification. The best I can guess is the scope is about a 3x scope. I'm really set on keeping the rifle as original as possible that if it comes down to it I would rather shoot iron sight then to remove it. For Pointers, here is the left profile: but I uploaded a bunch of images of all different views here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/23900803@N04/sets/72157623834777975/ I just didn't want to be "that guy" who posts a ton a pics, for those who have dial up. In the mean time I'm gonna see if I can't get any info from Stith, G&H or weaver and see if anyone will own up to this scope and mount. Thanks y'all for your help thus far, -RustyBoltz

My guess for the scope might be Weaver, Stith, Texan or possibly Kollmorgan but it should be marked somewhere. Cool gun no matter how you slice it

I haven't been able to find any markings but when I get home next I will remove the mount from the gun and the ring mounts from the scope and see if there might be some markings hiding somewhere.

You should be wondering how anyone used the rifle set up like it is. I think you'll find the answer is simple. Put the scope aside. Put the rifle in a safe cradle. Push the knurled button on the rear side of your rear sight base with your left thumb and pull the rear sight slide up and out of the base. Put it in a safe place that you can remember when you need it. Then slide your scope on. That work? PS - anyone with a set of bases, ot a one piece, that will fit a 1939 Model 70, please let me know. Thanks.
