Does anyone here deer hunt in Midland County? I'm from Odessa, and never heard much about the whitetails in the area growing up. All I ever hunted in the area was dove and quail. A family friend purchased some land in Midland just south of i-20 and set up some feeders in 07 and been slingin corn ever since and I've been shocked from what I've seen. This being said, I've never even seen a whitetail in Midland or Ector County till the aquisition of this land in 07. So anyone else been seein anything interresting in Midland?

I have seen some whitetails on the alfalfa fields just south of Odessa and know a man that owns some land between Midland and Rankin and they kill osme real nice whitetails up in the 170's. There are some good deer, both whitetails and mule deer in the areas that you are talking about.

All of the bucks are nice deer, but that deer in the 4th picture is a Hoss Daddy.

We have a pic of him chasing a doe past the cam on Christmas morning, but nobody hunted on Christmas. It's the only pic we've ever had on him in the daytime. Last season was my first to hunt the property, and honestly, I shot the first mature buck I saw (and it's a one-buck county) due to limited hunting time (second pic) then took my friend out a couple days later and got him his first buck (first pic). I do however look forward to hunting this land more this upcoming season and hopefully get some more quality blind time.

Here a lil bit better pic of the "Hoss Daddy" as you described him. Figures, the one pic on the trail-cam that gets corrupted.

Thanks for the enhancement. I live south of Odessa about 50 miles. The big ones are always there when you are not. Wait for that deer next year and you will kill a buck over 170. He will be really outstanding next year.

I have a good friend who hunts out 158 near Sprayberry and they have shot some monsters down there. I grew up in Odessa, there are some big ones south of town too out towards Pleasant Farms.

Hey BenBob, if you're from around there you'll know how rare this is...year round running water. Lucky enough to have Monahans Draw run through the property and even pool up really well (5-6 ft deep) in at least one location (havent explored it too much). Attracts a good amount of ducks even.

I grew up in Odessa too and used to hunt the McElroy ranch (70's & 80's), around Crane and McCamey we started seeing a few mule deer and a few white tail. And in Adrews Co we saw prong horn and mulies a couple of times too.

Never saw anything around Midland that I can remember but I wouldn't doubt it especially out toward Sterling City.

Man there's some places I haven't thought about in a while! Kinda makes me home sick!

I get home sick sometimes too Rick..then I go visit and am reminded of why I'm glad I don't live out there anymore. I love Odessa but it's not what it used to be.

Mike....oh yeah I forgot, there ain't no deer in west Texas.

Any natural water out here is a rarity. You do have a gold mine there. Just make sure you keep it your secret, or you might end up with some not so friendly friends that want to help you out in managing your deer herd.

We've had problems with vandals since day one. So far we've had two 4-wheelers stolen from locked storage trailer, people have clipped the wires in the feeders multiple times (and took the batteries out and threw them in the CRP), countless trail-cams have been stolen, and two weeks ago someone tried to back over the front gate then cut a lock on another gate and replaced it with their own lock.

Yeah, I think we have some of the best people in the world that live out here, but I am not sure we do not have some of the sorriest people in the world that live out here also. Everybody wants something for nothing and then when they figure out it is not going to happen, they just want to tear crap up. I would like to be sitting in a blind when someone comes along and vandalizes some of my stuff. I might see a hog in their direction that needs to be shot at.

kwrhuntinglab,

message me closer to the season and we'll see what's up. It's a small piece of land and shotgun blasts aren't much appreciated during deer season, so the ducks are hunted on a very limited basis. I'm always down for a couple new hunting buddies tho.

I wouldn't call Monahans draw natural water, but you're still lucky to have it go through your place.

yea, the water's mostly plant runoff, but it supports fish, so it can't be too bad.
