I need to purchase a rifle dedicated to hog hunting. What do you recommend for relatively short range shots, at night, which will allow for multiple quick shots? 12ga with 00 buckshot to meet that criteria. It's all about the amount of lead you can chunk into a herd.

Hunted on a south Texas ranch when the owner let (begged, actually)us hunt using his top drive at night. My son had his 300 Winmag, his friend had a 270, and I had my AK. They each got a hog, and I got two hogs and a coyote. The next day, we came up on a dozen hanging around a feeder. My son handed me his 300, took my AK, and got three. PS: for the naysayers, I have taken deer with the AK. Just a thought.

i have a sagia in 308 nice cabine with scope with lighted crosshairs and a laser on side for close up shots and a eight round mag great rifle and not much out there a 308 won,t handle with good shooting , if you won,t to go after them with a ar in 223 just make good neck and behind th ear shots and you will get your pork . shot placement is always key i carry a little more cause my 44 year old eyes are not as perfect as they used to be
NRA all the way god guns and guts made us free , i want all three

The 6.8 has 80% of the stopping power a .308 has with only 20% the recoil. Very hard to beat in a semi auto configuration. Ammo is about a buck a piece with good bullets.

I love my bolt guns, and I have a warm place in my heart for the black rifles, but shooting pigs is just fun with a lever gun.
My old Marlin 336 in .35 Remington packs a wallup, even on the old tough ones.
I'd love to find an old M1 Garand for the same purpose. The 30.06 has been a choice round for a lot of years for good reason.

I've had several 'dedicated' hog guns and coyote guns and whatever. I finally decided to dedicate my time and sight-in efforts at knowing ONE gun inside and out. I settled on a .243 because I still have yet to find anything it can't kill efficiently! So there's my answer on caliber. Now action-wise, I'd love to have a Remington autoloader. I'm not the biggest fan of the AR platform for hunting because they're heavy in anything other than mouse caliber and not really suited to me for ergonomic reasons.
If you're somewhat new to hunting, my best advice is to get a rifle that will do everything you need, and adapt it to what you do. There are so many options for scope mounts and accessories for even the most basic rifle nowadays, you just choose what you like and go to town!

Nice to see there are others that use an AK. Heck, mine are more accurate than the Mini 30 I ended up getting rid of.

Ruger 77/44 Supressed by SRT. Is a 44 mag rifle that is quieter than a pellet gun, giving you multiple shot opportunities.
