People ranges vary with a pistol, about 100,
You gotta be kidding!!!!! 100 Yards with a pistol??????? Not with open sights!!!! And I know very few that are good out to 100 yards even with a scoped TC pistol.

Some people just like to criticize. With all the rifle loads being made as handguns, 100 yards is very reasonable.

Well there is a difference between a big bore wheelgun and an Encore. Yes, a rifle cartridge will sho'nuff do 100yd out of a pistol, but to hit the target, while not impossible, other factors have to be in place. On the other hand, Elmer Keith had some spectacular shots out of what some would consider a 'plain Jane' revolver in .44mag. So there's much to be said about what A person can do vs. what EVERY person can do. Much comes down to practice. I know guys that have hunted with Contenders for years, and I can say that 100yd with one of THOSE is not out of the question, iron sights or no. Could I do it, uh, no.
We may be arguing apples and oranges a little bit. In either case, pistol hunting is a tough game. Your sight plane is very short, your points of control with the weapon are very limited, your ability to work a suitable rest into the equation is limited at best, then you have to do all the good stuff that makes any shot the best it can be!
Back to the point of the original post-anybody wanna start running and see if Larry can hit you? Didn't think so...LOL..

Yeah, I said in my post that people's ranges vary. The point of my post wasn't how far you could shoot with a pistol, it was that you should be comfortable within the range you shoot. Some people just like to jump all over you for no apparent reason.
When it comes to a rifle, I know that I can hit my target out to 300 yards with my off the shelf model 700 and 3x9 scope. Other people can't hit the broadside of a barn past 150. Those people should know their limits.
And no, I don't care how bad or good of a shot someone is, I'm not playing the moving target role!

LOL...yeah, Dirty Harry said it best.. 'a man's got to know his limitations'!
Maybe someday when I get out from under the black financial cloud I'll be able to do more pistol hunting!

Dude no one jumped all over you. You said that a person shooting a pistol should have a range around 100 yards, and I would be willing to bet that less than 10% of all handgun hunters can consitantly hit a target at that range (with or without a scope). That was the point I was getting at. And before you start spouting off about jumping all over someone for no reason just keep in mind that your the one that called me a PRI*K for no reason. Yes I saw that little comment before you deleted it!

As I said in an earlier post, I have been a handgun hunter for over 30 years. If I am using an open sighted revolver, I try to keep my shots at 50 yards or less if possible. If I am hunting with a scoped revolver I am good out to at least 100 yards or maybe a little more. If I am hunting with my scoped Encore then I am good out to 150 to 175 or so at least.
I ALWAYS use a solid rest and if I am not comfortable with the shot I don't take it!! I also practice a lot and use the best equipment that I can afford.

Some people can shoot out to 100 yards, so why even respond to that? That wasn't even the point. Why nitpick like that? Does it make you feel better? And maybe you are a prick, but I deleted it cause it was on a public forum, because there are kids on the site.

Just because someone disagrees with you doesnt mean they are "criticizing" or "jumping all over you", or "nitpicking". This is a hunting forum where people discuss hunting and things associtated with it. Thats why I responded "to that". Sure there are people out there that can shoot a 100 yards with a pistol. Heck the other day there was a video on here of a guy shooting 300 yards with a open sight revolver. They are in the minority though. If your going to lecture people on how far they should be able to shoot a pistol, rifle, crossbow, or bow then you should expect someone to discuss your expectations of them. Now answer a question for me.......Does calling me a "pr*ck" make you feel better?

Reread my post and tell me how I had any expectations. You need to learn how to read. I'd expect you to be able to see the point of a post, it was about knowing your limits. I didn't start up a topic and say "everyone that shoots a handgun should be able to shoot to 100 yards." My post was far from that. Do you feel like a bigger man for correcting me now?

I didn't start up a topic and say "everyone that shoots a handgun should be able to shoot to 100 yards." No not "everyone" but you did say that your range should be around 100 yards with a pistol. I just think thats a pretty high expectation. Calm down. This is suppose to be fun.

Try hunting with a pistol and you will see its alot harder than it looks. I can tell you right now I have missed alot more animals with my pistols than I have hit.......and some of those misses were less than 10 yards. It's unethical to shoot something and not have any clue as to whether you will hit it or not. Everyone misses but the laws of average are way against you so why risk wounding an animal? I can hit a paper plate 3 of 3 times at 100 yards with my Ruger .44. I know alot of guys that can't do it with a .300 win mag...it isn't the gun regardless of type....it's the SHOOTER

You'd be shocked at how many people take off hand shots when they need to be getting their elbows down on something. And they are really stubborn about it and constantly look for excuses. Gotta love it when they blame the scope.

Yeah Yeah lets here it for the cliches, but do you two have any idea how stupid easy the shots are that he's missing? I watched him shoot at the same deer 4 times before he got it on one show!

I don't know about his shooting skills, I didn't get to watch the show that much. I do respect the mans knowledge and would like to meet him. He has probably forgot more about WT deer than most of us will ever know.

Larry's book "Hunting Mature Bucks" is one of my favorite hunting books. He is an excellent author and that one is my favorite.
