Occasional Elk? Then the 30-06 because it does a better job pushing a larger grain bullet.
To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.www.NewHopeEquine.com - Health and Healing through Horses.

The 270 is a good caliber but more options with the 30-06. The more lead the more dead.

What? Not an option?
You need to call it...I can't call it for you.

Im amazed!!! I should have been more precise in my description, the primary function of this weapon is Texas Whitetail, with an Elk shot maybe once a year...I would have thoght the 270 would have won hands down!!!

I picked the .30-60 over the .270 Win and the reason why isn't only because I never shot an elk. It is what I know about the 2 calibers. It's not that the .270 Win won't do the job. It is that the .30-06 will do it better. I prefer the biggest caliber I have for "big game" and I don't think of a white-tailed deer as big game. I know they fall into that catagory, but there is an obvious weight difference between an elk and a deer.

Any animal hit correctly with either cartridge will be too dead to care. A Buddy of mine is a huge .270 fan. I used to use .270 brass to make .35 Whelen ammo and present it to him as my ".270 improved".
