270 Win for me. Barnes changed the rules of the game with the TSX. Partitions for deer, and TSX for bigger game - no probs.

Elk are pretty good sized critters and they live in some really nasty country. Based on that, I chose the 06. Better chance of dropping them in their tracks.

Been shooting the 06 since I was 13. Never had a problem getting punished before. Plus, when you are shooting an animal, you never feel any kick. I've shot 30-06 and 270, never really feel much from either.

The ought six for sure! Sure a .270 is plenty capable with the right shot placement and a premium bullet. But in a comparison like this, many other factors come into play. I.e. can you FIND premium bullets everywhere? For example, if I am flying to Colorado for an Elk hunt with my .270 and my "premium" ammo gets lost, am I sure I can find it again in small-town america? I'd be willing to bet though, that you can find any old box of '06 ammo. And i'd take crappy '06 ammo any day of the week over crappy .270 ammo for the same job.

Of the two I picked 30-06 for versatility, ammo cost and availability, and load choices...especially for ELk....
Same reasons I would pick 308 over either...

What do you need to kill an elk with a 50 cal????
270 still has almost 2000lbs of energy at 200 yards and the 30-06 almost the same i guess the 0-20 grains of lead or copper and .3 mill of bullet is so much bigger and better

Not a choice for me. Most deer that I have trailed and lost have been shot by a .270. 30-06 because you can buy loads from 55 grain all the way to 220. I say buy I think the 55s may be outlawed. They make a good turkey load.

For whitetail i'd prefer 270 but if I could only have 1 and I seen an elk, I'd be glad i picked the 30-06
The beauty of the Second Ammendment is it won't be needed until they try and take it.

Your 4 hour pack out might just turn into a 2 day ordeal. Like I said in my earlier post, it's not so much the size of the animal as the type of terrain. Actually, if I were elk hunting in treacherous terrain, I'd probably opt for something even bigger, like a 300 Ultra or a 338 Win Mag just for that reason.

I love my .270 and will stick with it...
That being said, I am using my Elk hunting trip next year as an excuse to buy a .300 win mag... (wife don't know any better)

My guess is many here who say the 06' is vastly better for elk have never even shot an elk....... Exactly what I was thinking. I have shot 2 of my 5 with my 270 and they hit the ground just as quick as the 3 I killed with my 300. Dead is dead.

The .277 Vs. .308 caliber bullets one in 30-06 and one in .270 it is almost the same bullet in almost the same case. I do not understand the debate, I own and use both.
Never been to a camping world. I prefer Dick's to be honest.
