100 + yards is a loooooooooooooong way to predictably shoot a tiny little 17 grain bullet. I know it can be done.. But conditions had better be ideal. Otherwise, the effect of wind alone will throw the projectile waaaaay off course.
17s are a blast to shoot.. I love mine. But you should know and heed its limitations.

best thing about my 17hmr was the day i got rid off the piece of junk and got a 22 mag. Will it kill yes with a perfect shot. Would I shoot one behind the shoulder? he!! no Stick to head shots, hunt on days when you have no wind

Here is another story,I saw a fox on the back of my proptery last week,I have neighbors so I took my 17hmr and an old weems hand call,went back and sat down under a tree about 300 yards from my house,blew about 10 minutes,called up a big coyote,he came to about 30 yards out stoped when I moved to line him up in the scope.I had about 2 seconds at that point so I put the 20 gr hp about 2 inches behind his right ear,bang flop.Do I recomend, hunting coyotes with a hmr,NO.Do I take it when I hunt coyotes No but it was all I had at the time.But he would not have been any deader any quicker reguardless of calaber,I guess I was luckly

I've taken probably well over 200 raccoons with my Savage 17HMR in the last year and it stops them in their tracks everytime just about. Those that do move don't go very far, maybe 10 yards. I did get to line up on a small fox one night but the little beggar wouldn't hold still long enough for me to get a shot. He was sneaking up on a rabbit and I was trying to work my spotlight and aim at the same time and it just didn't work out.

I do love to hunt small game with that thing though. Very accurate and fun to shoot.

use hornady 20 grn XTP bullets. You shouldnt have a problem.

ijust bought a savage 17 and i love it. i use the hollow points i like them. i checked some stuff on the internet and it showed some shots fired with the 17 hollow point. one was in a can with a half roll of paper towels that had water in it, man it made a big hole on the other side. i was impressssssed.

hollow points are good on small game such as rabbits or other rodents but when you are trying to kill a larger animal like a coyote you need a bullet that is going to penitrait deep prior to expansion. I shot a squirl with a 17 grain bullit and it did about as much damage as a 22 LR. Granted it was not a hollow point witch I am sure if it was it would have done much more damage. A qouple of days later I shot a rabit in the head with a 20 grn XTP bullet and it almost blew the entire side of its head off. Either way a 17 HMR is a great all around gun. If it was legal to deer hunt with then I would use it instead of the gun I use now.
