Your dog isn't perfect...neither is mine or any dog. If he/she/it decides to do something stupid...let's say run fast game. At a half mile away from you then what are you going to do? Run drags again? If that is your answer you haven't been doing this long enough to see mistakes.
Simply put you need to have a way to correct MINOR infractions in the field. If you have major infractions then yes you need to go back to the basics of obedience and and command. But those are few and far between when the dog progresses to the field. Plus at that point YOU have done something wrong in the early stages of training.
