I am like you, I don't want to spend a lot of money on trail cameras, but I want it to work pretty well. I started out a few years ago with $200 each Stealthcams. I had 3 of these. They worked perfect for 1 year, then they all went out.

I decided not to pay that much again, so after a lot of research I went with the Moultrie D40. They are around $99 and on sale for $79. I have 8 of them on my ranch right now and have been using them exclusively for about 2 years. They work very good for the money. Occasionally one will go out or have a problem. Then send it back to the factory or take it back to where you bought it, along with the box and they will give you a new one.

I have had very good results with the D40 and would recommend it for an affordable camera.

Ive done ALOT of research the past couple of weeks on cams and just about every review of the wildgame ir4 is very positive. Im buying one tomorrow and will post my finding when I get them. I think it runs about 79$

it is not a bad "starter cam" , most work good for about 3 mo. then start falling apart. Mine died and now I need to send it back . I know a guy that sent his back 3 times since july. Just remember like with most gear- you get what you pay for so keep your receipt.

Yep, I also have a Wildgame. It started taking pictures of every leaf. So I moved it. At first, it worked real well. Now, I get about 3 pictures a week out of it at a feeder. It won't even take pictures of me standing in front of it. I've tried Cudde, Moultrie, Wildgame, Leaf River, Stealth and probably a couple more. The Cudde seems to be about the best.

I don't think there is a good budget game cam.

They are $89 at academy, I just picked up the flash model for $79. I have yet to have any issues, first one has been out since Nov, no issues at all. Figured I'd give the flash model a try to see whick I like better. I'm putting it out tomorrow on the second feeder.

I figure for the price, I could not go wrong.

I hope yours works, and keeps on working, better than mine did. I can walk up to it and hit the power button and it will take a picture of me. Then I leave and come back a couple of days later. I find a couple of pictures. It appears that it goes to sleep after the first couple of shots and then doesn't wake up.

How much would I need to spend to get into a model with better reliability. I'm still willing to try one cheaper unit, and a sencond more expensive unit to compare. With such a range of prices is spending more the answer?

I have got three of them, so far they are still working fine. I have had them for about 6 months. I average about 30-40 pics a day/night. Had one that took a lot of landscape pics of nothing but found out why. I had it too close to the 55 gal drum feeder. As the feeder heated up during the daytime, it thought it was a deer I guess. Also you do need to clear out any tall grass that might set off the motion sensor for aboy 10 feet.

I have the camo versions of the Wildgame iR4 and have been pleased with the picture quality for what I paid.

I have seen a huge drop in battery life since the temps got down around freezing. Other than that, as stated earlier, you want to make sure you are not aiming it right at a feeder. I had tons of pics of nothing but my feeder until moving the camera far enough away. You have to find a happy medium between distance and how that effects picture qaulity.

I fixed this by raising the camera height, then tilting it down so that the feeder is not in the pictures. However, since the camera is no longer horizontal, the last 2 times I switched the SD cards out I noticed water weeping out of the areas where the C batteries slide up into. This was after some good rains and not just condensation. Since we are in a wetter period I simply take some black duct tape with me and I place a piece on the top where the lid snaps closed. This has kept it dry now for the last 2 weeks.

On another forum, a member has photographed how he hooked his game cam up to a 6v battery. Pretty slick and he's getting a good amount of time out of a charge, even now during the winter.

Since I live 25 minutes from my lease, I use the dead batteries as an excuse to get out of the house and hit the lease mid week... deer2

The only other issue I have, and it's not the cameras fault, is that birds have now discovered the corn at my feeder. I've got more pics of blue jays, cardinals, doves, finches and whatnot then I ever wanted.

MOULTRIES ARE GOOD FOR TARGET PRACTICE!!!!!!!!!!! I bought a Moultrie D40 on black friday and set it out no pics. when it would go to sleep mode it was "eternal sleep" mode it would not wake up. Took it back got another and same thing my friend who bought one as well did the same thing. Their customer service took 3 weeks to respond to email and estimated wait time on the phone was between 50-80 minutes. I bought my mom the wildgame innovations 1.3 MP for $39 as a stocking stuffer and she is getting some amazing pics with it and after having it out for three weeks is still on the same batteries. I wish I had bought 5 of them! I am sure the D40s had a bad batch of circuit boards but with their customer service the way it is they can kiss me between the back pockets. From months of reading everything I can find your best bet is to buy a pawn shop sony digital camera and buy one of those $99 kits and build it yourself or for like $35 they will build it for you.

We have the lower end Wildview and are looking to upgrade to a higher MP rating. They aren't two bad for low MP (2.0 MP), http://www.wildviewcam.com/HTML/product_xt2.html. Looking to go up to the 5.0 MP with infrared ones. http://www.wildviewcam.com/HTML/product_xtir.html.

Here are a few different shots from the 2.0 ones, bought at Academy.

I rolled the dice on a Wildgame iR4c. First off one case latch is a little lose(maybe forced during assembly?).Had to get my feet wet and on a tight buget I need 2-3 cams, it is a start any way.

I'm running eight of the non-IR Wildviews and Wildgames (are they the same manufacturer? They're identical) Anyway, other than average battery life and low memory without SD cards they haven't hicupped once in I guess about three years. They're not ALL that old. I started out with two of them and just kept adding to my arsenal. I need to convert them all to rechargable batt's and solar panels, though. Might be a good Summer project.

Wildview camers are marketed by Wildgame I believe. Yep, hated going through the batteries quickly. You will enjoy them more when you convert to rechargeable batts and solar panels.

Ok I did love this camera until I had to replace the batteries in them. They have cheap plastic tabs that break off which will not allow your batteries to have direct contract. I had two of them do this and had to send them back to Bass Pro Shops. I exchanged them for the Moultries D40's for $89.99 w/moultrie sd cards. Wildgame Innovation needs to fix this and they will have a great product.

Luckily that hasn't happened to mine yet. I haven' heard of the tabs breaking off as of yet. Maybe you got into a bad batch of plastic castings. Anyone else have this problem with their Wildviews/Wildgame camers?

I'm not even sure what plastic tabs are being talked about? I've never had a problem with the battery compartments on any of mine, other than having to empty and re-fill them too much!

I've read reviews upon reviews and the Moultrie D40 is apparently the best bang for your buck game camera. The pic quality is pretty darn good and I will be buying 1-2 shortly. I can't see spending tons of cash on something that is just gonna sit out in the woods for someone to steal or something to tear up, lol. So I would feel comfortable spending the $79 for one at academy for my spot.

I think either my IR went out, or it only works with new batteries. It does not seem as strong as it was when I bought it at the begining of the season.

My newest flash model took pictures the first day I set it up, then nothing the rest of the week. But took pics thru the weekend. I'll check it this next week and see what its doing. It may be going back as well.

Other than that, I'm still pleased with them. I will be doing the solar upgrade soon

You will like it when you do. All you have to do after that is swap the cards out as they fill up.

Just pulled the flash model after not taking any pictures for the past week. Seems to be going to sleep and not waking up.

Back to academy it goes frown
