Has anyone on here ever been on a hunt at the Devil's River State Natural Area? My FIL and I got drawn for a hunt this year and don't know what all to expect. I have gotten a little bit of information but would love to get some more information from someone that has actually been there or knows the area. We will be hunting aoudad, Corsican ram, and Axis.

I haven't hunted there, but used to have a lease on Dolan Creek Rd, which is where the DRSNA is located. My buddy is the Park Ranger there as well.
Count on lots of tough terrain, big draws, etc. It will hunt more like Colorado or New Mexico than Texas. You can do a lot of stalking, glassing, etc. Up one hillside, down the other. Repeat.
Good luck! One of the most beautiful areas of Texas!

Thanks Gus! That is kind of what I am hearing. I asked how I could prepare for the hunt and make it a successful hunt and they told me to make sure I am in shape. Ha! I guess I need to do a little hiking prior to going.

I have hunted the area twice back when it was archery only, before they started the rifle draws. It is very rough and rugged country. You will need a high clearance vehicle to get around. Make sure you do not forget anything because you will be a long way from no where. First time we went the had a restroom and shower but no hot water and that well water was cold. Last time though they had added a hot water heater. With a rifle you should have a good hunt as you can get on the high ground and watch the draws. We hunted the river pasture both times we went which are to large plateaus with the main road splitting them. As you cross the cattle gaurd into that pasture there will be a creek crossing with a draw that goes east up the plateau stay on the south side of the draw as you go up and there is a wind mill and water tank on the top. If it has been dry this is a good area. The manager of that area back then was part of the family that owned the ranch before it sold to the state. If you get a chance to and he will let you you need to drive down to the river it is a rugged but very scenic area...sorry so long if I recall anything else I will add it later. Good Luck!
If you have to stop and think about it,then you should really stop and think about!

Thanks Elmo! Great information! We are planning on taking a jeep so hopefully that will help us get around a bit. Do you know if we get to pick our "compartment" to hunt or if they just pre-select the areas for each group?

Hunted the original exotic pasture. Better be in shape for that one. Definite 4X4 country, vehicle or human !

I also had a lease on Dolan Creek Rd. You are getting good info here.
You will also be well served to locate some tasty looking draws and canyons and set up high with good optics. You will be noisy moving around so wait and watch. Lots of stuff moving around.

Thanks for all the information. I have a few more questions as we get ready for the hunt next week...we were told we need to have 8-ply tires. We have a 4x4 jeep with 4-ply tires that seems like it can drive over anything. We are pulling the jeep with an F-150 with 4-ply tires. How bad is Dolan Creek Rd? Will we make it down the road with 4-ply tires? How bad is it once you get into the park? Would the jeep be able to get around on 4-ply? Or do we really need to get some 8-ply tires? Thanks!

Been a while since I was there, but Dolan Creek Road was an all weather road you could drive a passenger car on. I'm sure it is still that way. If you go off road, then you just need to watch what you are doing.
