Having a heck of a time shooting a spike with that second Buck tag we have for Young County now. But they are there.

Neighbors actually seem to be passing these. AR rules might have something to do with it. Lots of small 8 point bucks running around, but I have not seen a doe since opening day.





I will go back soon to try it again.

Thanks for sharing!! My lease is more of a "Knob Creek" bourbon camp.

Is the buck in the last picture legal under AR? It looks like his ears and antler width are just about equal.

Our county went under AR restrictions this year and I have no experience in trying to make that call. Just wondering how an experienced hunter would judge that buck.

I don't think that buck is 13", outside the ears would be legal.

I don't think it is legal under AR's. My best guess is that is about 12.5". Most definetly a young buck, which is exactly what the law is trying to protect.

The 13 inches has to be inside spread. That one is not even close. But the neighbors would have shot it without the AR. Where that particular stand is, the property over the fence is owned by a retired guy that brings several family members to hunt. It would have been shot. At least in our case, I think the new AR rules will really help us on our place. In the past have had spikes too that get big and old, finally we can shoot them without using that one buck tag to do it.

Thanks for the information. I agree that buck is too young but I was under the impresseion that a rule of thumb was if the antlers were outside the ears then it was considered to be 13 inches and legal.

Are you saying the inside spread between antlers has to be at least 13 inches?

I am confused but will check my TPWD book tonight.

Looks like the ARs are already helping your lease. You need nice, young bucks before you can have nice, old bucks.

I reread the regs and I have a clearer understanding now. I confused myself-which is not hard to do.
