i think the consensus would be to kill a deer on opening day, thats when MOST of the big bucks are killed in the state. There are a ton of place, South Texas included, where you likely won't even see the bigger bucks until the rut starts in December-January. One of my buddies has a place and you'd swear it was completely barren of bucks until it starts and then they're running everywhere. wont argue that, but MOST of the big bucks killed every year are killed on opening weekend.go look at almost any hunting contest online, and most of the top bucks will have kill dates very close to the start of the season
