I need to buy a deer rifle for my 10 yr old. He can't reach the trigger on my .30-06. Any suggestions?

My 8 year old Grandson took a pig last weekend with a Remington 222. I really need to shorten the stock but it worked out OK.

Academy still has the youth Remington 700 ADL in .243 - my 10yr old has one with a slip-on limbsaver recoil pad. My 8yr old has a Savage .243 - had to buy an adult one (he's left handed) and have it cut down, stock and barrel - he has a Pachmyr recoil pad on it. Both guns shoot well and the boys enjoy shooting them - very comfortable recoil. See my post in Deer Hunting - Successful Youth Weekend - they used these guns and were also successful last year for both deer and a hog.

I think catfishatc has the right idea here, get something that fits them and has low recoil, that is a youth model and a 243 in a nut shell. I wouldnt start him out with a '06 even if it wasnt too bif for him to hold, because it is too much gun, once a kid starts to flinch it is hard to stop, and it only takes one shot to start.

You might also check the Remington Model 7 Youth Model. A little shorter and lighter and w/either Remington you can buy an aftermarket stock when he outgrows the shorter one.
Good Luck and Good Hunting.

the NEF handi rifle might also work well, there cheap, effective, and avalible in .243 or also .223, which i don't really recommend as a deer cartridge but will work in a pinch. its a good round for ear shots on hogs though

30-06 is too much for a 10 yo. I'm a little older than 10 & shoot a 30-06 and at present I feel it is probably the biggest I would use. I would vote for a .243 also, unless shots will be 100 yards or less then a 30-30

i had a 30-30 when i was ten and that was a lot of wallop for a kid. i could manage it though. keep range sessions with a deer rifle short at that age.

I agree. My Marlin kicks nearly as bad as my 7 mag. I would vote for a 223 or 243 and work on shot placement with them.

I second the NEF Hand-Rifle. Bought one for my 8 yr old and he is doing great with it. Surprisingly, it is pretty accurate and I like the single shot as a safety measure for a little guy.

My 10 yr old nephew shoots a rem. 700 243 and has no problem with it. The recoil is light and its a great deer round.

How about a Marlin 1894C in .357 magnum? Easy to handle, not much recoil at all; good knockdown power under 75 or so yards.
I haven't hunted with one, but they sure are fun to shoot down at the range!

if your seeking only a deer rifle, don't overlook the .270 in various manufacturers and budgets... with the new reduced recoil rounds, the reports are stating the recoil is equal to a .243... swapping out rifle stocks from youth to adult or adult to youth are available from sources like e-bay considering which model you may seek to purchase....
if interested in other types of shooting, the NEF's with the multitude of barrel swaps available, is a very good start...
best of luck in your decision...

Also consider this, a heavy-barrel 308. I use mine (Sav 10FP 26") with youngsters and light loads. the weight of the gun helps reduce felt recoil. And you have a gun too!

I guess that depends on the kid. I was shootin a 30/06 when I was 10. I know a few kids around that age bracket that shoot an 06 and shoot it pretty well.
I do have to say go with the NEF. Good little rifles for the money. You can get anextra stock and cut it down for him now and then put the original back on when he gets bigger.

And you was driving an 18-wheeler instead of a tricycle like all the other kids were, too, Jason. Ain't everybody born looking like full grown grizz...

I go along with the Handi-Rifle in 243. If you decide on a bolt action instead then the suggestions of either the 243 or 270 with the reduced recoil loads are a good option. The plus side of the 270, is that the kid won't actually out grow it, especially if at some point you decide to go after elk or muleys out of state. JMO.

CHC brings up a good point. i have has some friends back out of mule deer hunts because all they own is a .243 that they got when they were kids. my first gun was a 30-30 then a .270 that i got on default when i was 12 ( but it was made clear that i would get no more rifles unless i bought them myself). never felt under gunned. had a few chances at exotic ranches where a nilgai or an elk or stag was not out of the question, not to mention 250 lb axis or big aoudad.

I love it.
I was shooting a 03-A1 Springfield and a double barrel LC Smith 12 ga when i was 9. Shot my first double rifle the same year 416 Rigby. Took my first buck with my dads 300 Weatherby when i was 8 " grabbed the wrong rifle".
My choice for a starter rifle would be 243 or 260. It would last them a life time.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.
