I have loaded mine both ways, but prefer a trailer. I have a nice ditch at home and can load with out anything there. We have a 4 foot by 7 foot steel door for a ramp at deer camp... it helps a lot. At one place, we back up to a HUGE ant mound... just don't stand still long...
I have a buddy scared to death of them, he uses the winch on his...

i got the chit scared out of my a few years ago while loading my 4 wheeler. i drove into town and bought a $600 trailer that day. Dad told me, "it's a waste to buy a trailer". I told him the trailer is cheaper that me living with him the rest of my life if I'm Paralyzed from an accident.

when i was in hs, i was loading mine in an asphalt driveway and it hopped and popped of the ramps, luckly i was nimble and hopped of before the big crash, i always stand on one side with the opposite knee on the seat, this way if it hits the fan and we are going down, i just hop off?

Watched a buddy load his up one evening into his F-350. Built up a little too much speed and the next thing you know the drivers side of the bed is wallered in and his sliding window is missing. Luckily he was alright, but made for a heck'a of a giggle from us! And fyi, we did drive for him since he had started a little earlier!

Thankfully, my driveway drops down towards the street so that I can back against the curb with only a slight incline once I lay the ramps against the bed. Then I just push it up into the bed of my truck.
I also NEVER back it out of my truck like I've seen so many guys do. I ALWAYS climb in the bed and roll it back by hand.

One thing I would like to add is the fact that a lot of the late model automatic four wheelers have speed brakes and you can crank and place in reverse and walk them down without needing to accelerate or brake. To find if yours has speed restrictor brakes pull up on an incline and put it in reverse and see for yourself.

Although I've loaded my wheeler for years on my truck (nervously each time with no accidents), this thread is making me even more nervous about the next time I load mine (this Friday). I might try backing against the curb, even if it means blocking a little residential traffic when I do it. I have good straps on my ramps, the ramps coming out from under me isn't what bothers me, it's the angle steepness of the ramps on my tailgate, which is funny because I know I climb hills at my lease steeper than my what my ramps are on my tailgate.

I agree. I would not walk the ramps. I actually meant walk it back standing beside the truck and holding the steering straight why it backs down in reverse with what I believe is called engine brake which lets mine unload very slowly and safely.

I am pretty tall. When I load mine in the truck I put a block against the front of the bed with the wheeler in low gear and just walk it up the ramps while I stand on the ground. When I am ready to unload I just put it in neutral and roll it back while holding the handle bar brake and let it roll down easy. If it falls I will not be on it.

Although I'm not that tall...I'm gonna try that! I have a toolbox so it's not gonna hit my back window. Thanks!
