Well I passed on a nice 8 last week, but at least 2 deer will be in my freezer before the season is over. Why shoot a 2.5 year old nice 8 point the first week of season? I have 2 months left to find a decent mature deer, or a trash buck. It doesn't have much to do with horns, at least IMO it has more to do with shooting a mature deer. I don't care if it is a 14 point, or a spike. But I only want to shoot mature deer. I don't consider myself a horn hunter, if I was the 8 would be dead.

If it's legal, why not? If you pass on it great but if you want it, great. Some folks aren't that lucky to know that if they pass on a nice 8 point, that they'll still have venison in the freezer later. That's good that you do.

Because I am only taking 3 deer off my property, so I may not even get one. Will let my niece, and my sons and or wife get one. I will only take out a mature deer, because if I take a small one then one of my kids, niece or wife won't get one. I will have meat in my freezer, if 2 does are not dead by the last day of doe season I will take 2 of them. I am trying to do what is best for the deer on my property. And IMO taking a great 2 year old is not what is good for my place. I would much rather take a crappy 4 point that is old. If not killing a deer for a year or two is best for my place I won't take any. I have plenty opportunity to get a deer, why settle for something that has great potential when I can take one that doesn't?

Helo I think that's great. That's what I have done. I just don't think its the role of government to tell me to do that. I think we'd agree more than we disagree.

Thanks, good luck to you. I hope I get one this year, but I am having fun so far.

I am torn on that, because the same could be said with any law, or regulation. I don't like the 13" spread either, I just think it is the best way to do it. I would much rather everyone be able to judge an older deer, but even with me trying to learn I still don't have it down. I truly believe that the 13" restriction will let bucks get older, and IMO that is a good thing. It may not work in every area, and in the ones it doesn't it should be removed. I am seeing more and better deer every year, and now with me adding protein I hope it gets even better.

And yes I agree with you on most things, and even to a point I agree with you on this. I don't want government in my life, really at all. But it is there, and until we do something about it, it will continue. Heck I can't even buy a dang toilet that flushes more than what 2.5 gallons. bang

Sig, the ARs are not for people like you or Helo that would pass on a deer like that. It is for the thousands of hunters out there that shoot anything that walks. AR counties are filled with tons of these types of hunters. It's unfortunate that a better solution cannot be reached, but ARs seem to be the best hard and fast way to control the "shoot anything" crowd.

Too bad more people out there don't think more like Helo. If they did, maybe those counties wouldn't be in the state it is. Everyone on here is constantly saying "well if I don't shoot that 1.5 year old 8 pointer, my neighbor will." Then, you could manage however you please, but that's not the way it is.

To a point I agree, but... if someone wants to shoot that sucker, why do you me or the government get to say no? I still don't like the concept.

And I sure don't like going from one deer to four

I see at as the same reason they can say I can not shoot duck with lead shot, or can not shoot a doe but on certain days, or that I can not carry a pistol during archery unless you have a CCW permit. They tell us all these things, this just happens to be the only one I agree with out of the ones I listed.

It sounds like your area should not have went from one to four deer. I think it is too much for my area as well.

But what about fishing regs? Flounder went from 10 a day, to 5 a day, and only 2 in November. That sucks that I can't personally catch a limit of 10 a day, but at least that will still be there in 30 years for me and my family to catch.

This can be said of ANY law. If I like to drive 80 on the highway, who is the government to tell me not to? If I like to shoot deer from a county road, who is the government to tell me not to? If I like to smoke pot at home, who is the government to tell me not to? If I like to beat my wife, who is the government to tell me not to? (Okay, the last one was kinda bad...but you get the point.)

Thanks, I think if more people either owned the land they hunted, or had a long term lease they would be more willing to do what is best for the herd. But when people don't even know if they will have the lease next year they tend to not care as much.

I gotta admit, I am seeing a monster on my game cam this year and I shot a monster last year....is it dumb and/or possible that maybe it's just the fact that the reason I don't like ARs is that I've hunted a certain way for over 30 years and I just don't like someone telling me that now I have to shoot a deer with a certain antler spread width? Don't answer that question.... grin

I agree with this, but what is you have someone next to you that doesn't feel the same. Owns 20 acres, has 8 kids and they all shoot their limits. You could get screwed without some sort of government regulation. They don't care is the deer is a fawn with spots, a deer is a deer.

I see it in our area, one place close to us is some out of the area owner, starting in opening weekend it sounds like a war zone. 160 acres, and over this coming weekend I can almost bet there will be at least 10 deer killed. But it will take at least 30 or 40 shots, but more likely 60 or 70. The best part is their racket and hell raising gives us some nice deer to shoot at for the next 2 to 3 weeks. I am an hour away, retired and go when I want. And the clowns won't be back until Thanksgiving.

Well, if there is a scraggly spike and a big buck, you better shoot the spike just to prove you are a meat hunter and not a horn hunter. I wouldn't want you to come off as a HORN hunter!
