Looks great Buzz. up

I finally tried a Wagyu steak for the first time last month on an exotic game hunt. Owner said he paid $1200 for 6 steaks eek2 and then bought Wagyu fajitas that were cooked another night. I really wanted to like them but it wasn't that good to me. Everything about that steak was off to me, rubbery, super fatty (don't like much fat) and the flavor was just weird to me. I was thankful for the meal and ate the hell out of it, but would take a Prime steak from HEB any day and have more money for guns, ammo, & fishing tackle. Don't mean to pizz on your thread, just sharing my unwanted opinion. grin

Never had Wagyu, looks a little to fatty for me that would drown out the steak flavor to much, would eat it if given to me though.

Pig_Popper, that's a good looking Waygu ribeye. Where did you get it? Thanks.

Prime steaks are usually better to me than Texas Wagyu, but when you start talking A5 its a different game.

Flurry’s Meats and Provisions in Flower Mound

They don’t always have it though - I went in for Picanha and came out with the ribeyes

Terrible comparison Wagyu vs Choice hammer

Here is a couple of discounted Prime Ribeye's I bought from Sams for I bet a lot less. Now is your Wagyu better, more than likely but at least this is a better comparison.

Wagyu, to me is just like chewing straight fat. I much prefer a regular beef, well fed and aged properly to the wagyu . I guess it’s just personal preferences. Also I can buy 2 regular beef steaks, for what 1 wagyu costs.

I've only had wagyu burgers, so that doesn't really count. But I agree with you. It looks way too fatty for my liking. That's why I prefer NY Strips over ribeyes, leaner and meatier cuts.

Pig_Popper All messing with ya aside, the marbling on your Wagyu looks pretty dang good, not to much marbling where it might drown out the flavor or texture of the meat.

Questions. What did you cook the steaks on, oven, grill or, were they cooked medium rare, medium or? I got a big bottle of Jameson, what is your favorite way to drink it, neat, on ice or mix?

In the future Buzz & Popper, take a picture of the inside of the steaks so we can get an appreciation of the Grill Masters pièce de résistance!

Many moons ago I use to load up the freezer with chicken leg quarters when they went on sale for .19¢ a lb.

Each person just needs to buy one wagyu and try it. My experience was that it was, very strange, heavy marble…but just a different taste of marble, tender. It’s just flat unusual, each person should try it. In the steak above, getting Prime at before marked down price of $15.98lb is very cheap, Some have said Sam’s grades their beef in a different manner, who knows. I always look for that USDA stamp. Also, some meat shops just get their beef at higher grade places. Cook on mesquite wood at 1200 degrees at the coals(that temp cannot be reached by other means if cooking…that temp will Carmel or melt the fat, unlike a gas or whatever method, plus mesquite taste. On another note, 7000 cows died in fire, beef in US is at 70 year low, cattle at sale barn are at all time high, $4.60lb on 200 to 300lb calf. Hold on to your jock straps.

Waygu is such a different animal. We eat a ton of it. My wifes uncle raises texas waygu and we get half a steer a year off of him. It's nothing special. I would say I would prefer prime to it, but we get it for free. But A5 waygu is amazing. It has to be cooked differently than prime. No oil or added fat and super hot. Not that that's different, but it's handled differently to get all of that fat to render. I think about it as an appetizer or something like that. It's incredibly filling with the fat content so not much eating after. But it's like a thing to try every now and then. Not a replacement for prime ribeye. Just a different thing.
