How bad is this carbon ring? This is a 300 win mag h1000 shooting a 208 eldm and 215 berger. Every gun is different, but how often are you cleaning. TIA

That’s not bad at all. I clean when I think it needs it and I don’t look every time I clean.

I’ll start by saying I’m not an authority. I don’t 100% trust what I think I see with my bore scope. I do however trust what my rifle is telling me. Is the rifle shooting poorly compared to groups of the past? Is it showing you signs of excessive pressure? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Have you considered using a bore brush one size larger than your bore and spin it in the end of the chamber? I'm probably not describing it very well so suggest checking youtube for carbon ring cleaning.
I was wrong...on anything technical. Fitz............. is right, ya know............

I've read about this kind of product on other sites. I've never tried it, but I think I'll get some and give it a shot. If it doesn't work in the gunroom, I'll send it to the kitchen.

Another thing to try to completely remove it a little easier is to take a wet oversized bore mop and a short cleaning rod if you have one shove about half way into barrel and let it soak a good while then brush.

CLR works good but do not leave it in your barrel long. It will damage the barrel with extended soaking. Look it up, there are several good articles available on it.
Frank Green who owns Bartlien barrels swears by Hoppes #9. He also has some good articles on the subject.
In my experience they’re easy to clean when the barrel is hot.

Hoppe's No.9 is pretty effective on powder fouling. It will even remove metal fouling eventually, but you have to soak a bore for quite a while with it to get jacket fouling out. I think it took three or four days or so of soaking to get all the metal out of the bore on a .280 I experimented with years ago (obviously there are better ways to remove copper fouling). I like to finish off a cleaning with No.9 to get all the residual copper solvent (I use Bore Tech Eliminator, and sometimes Sweet's 7.62 if I need more horsepower). One of the benefits is that the No.9 leaves a little bit of corrosion prevention behind. Not much, but it's there.

I've had three customer rifles come back with carbon ring build up. They called and said their ammo won't fit anymore. "Well, I didn't have your bullet jammed in the rifling. It's a carbon build up." "Can you get it out?" Sure can.
Boretech Eliminator on a patch. Park it in the throat for an hour. The ONLY time I'll put a bronze brush in a barrel is for this reason. .45 cal bronze brush on a short cleaning rod, and that chucked up in a cordless drill. Rotate it on low for about a minute. Dry patch in the throat, rotate by hand. See what you see. Repeat the process as necessary.

Have you tried Hoppes No9? I know it is not the fastest way but I have never harmed a barrel and it works for me. Soak it with Hoppes No9 and let it stew for 30-40 minutes. Then use some elbow grease and a copper brush to scrub it out. Repeat till I get it all scrubbed out. It can be stubborn but that doesn’t look to be too bad. I’ve used the brush chucked in a drill on revolver cylinders but never tried it in a rifle chamber. Thank you for that JG. I will say that I have no qualms about putting a copper brush down my rifle barrels and never boogered one up doing it.

When I let one get out of control, I tried several products so can't say which had the greatest effect. I bought a short brass cleaning rod so I could run a bronze brush with drill. My guess is, letting it soak with your product of choice, using the brush and drill, and some elbow grease and you'll be back in business. Post some after pictures.

it’s better but not completely clean. i checked two more rifles and they look good(6.5 creed and 7 mm prc). i expect this rifle to shoot good to great when clean.
i hope to finish next week.
