Need a piece of furniture grade (oak or maple, can stain to match) wood 36" X 4" X 1.5" to make a replacement skid for a Cracker Barrel rocking chair. Looks like they're made by Hinkle but I don't see a way to get parts from them so I'll have to fix it myself. About five years ago, maybe six, when it was broken, I sent the skid off to the guy in Sherman that restored my parents' heirloom dining set. I called a couple times and he said he was still looking for the proper species because it was not oak like I thought. I told him I didn't care that much and to just get something close. Well I guess he closed shop because he doesn't answer the phone any longer and I never got my broken part back. Where can I get a chunk of wood?

Pass the gravy.

From Hinkle Chair Company.

ROCKER RUNNER MEASUREMENT
INSTRUCTIONS

How to measure holes for replacement rocker runners:
*These measurements are necessary to order correctly bored runners that will
fit your chair.*
• Turn the rocker upside down
• Measure the distance from the center of the front post to the center of the
back post. In most cases the distance will be 18 ¾” but occasionally it will
vary.
• This dimension will enable us to know what distance to bore the holes for
the new runner.
• Measure the diameter of the hole in the runner – it should be 3/4” or 7/8”
• Price for a pair of runners including shipping is $ 35.00
• Rocker runners are available in a variety of colors and unfinished.
Please call 615-384-8477 to receive assistance or to place an order.

Found that but I do not have a model number since the chair is made for Cracker Barrel and does not match the model number list they provide. I printed off some of the information to call them later.

Probably they were attached with glue. Looks like oak, but maybe is Hickory/Pecan. For Hinkle, I’d lay the chair on its side and trace out the rocker skid and mark the hole locations and angle. Send that to Hinkle.

Absolute worst case, bring it to me. I’ve done a few porch rocker skid replacements for a local rancher, and I did make one small rocking chair for a favorite grand niece. And I believe I have some White Oak that would work, or I know I can buy some from Dakota Hardwoods in Waco.

The hard part is matching the new skid to the existing skid, or the rocker will rock a bit unevenly. Because of that, a matching skid from Hinkle would likely be the best match, so tracing it might be best, along with width, height, etc.

I can make it if I had the wood. It won't get used much but I hate to throw it out or leave it in the garage.

You can get the wood you need at Dakota Hardwoods in the DFW area. Pretty sure they have at least one location. Best to order on the phone, I’ve never had any luck showing up and trying to buy what I needed at the Waco location.

That might be enough information for Hinkley to know what they need.

Dallas hardwoods would have what you need. Trace good leg, make a hardboard templet, ruff cut on bandsaw, finish on router table with a templet following bit. Wood is probably Ash, hickory or white oak as stated above.

EZ project if you have the tools & knowhow.

Got in touch with the chair maker and they are sending a pair of skids for $35. That's cheaper than I could make one.
