What’s y’all’s main go to for pigs?

For years I hunted w an AR10, got tired of lugging it and I’d seem to always find ways to burn more ammo than I should.

I went to a bolt gun 2 years which is much lighter and I burn less ammo

The AR10 was more fun and thinking about going back maybe this time in 6.5 Grendel

What are y’all mainly using?

I use a bolt or single shot rifle. Apparently my Garand (git off my corn) is hog repellent.
Land owner in most cases wants the meat to be processed so I don’t shoot more than one at a time.

I mainly use hogs as hunting opportunities for my milsurps, so I guess mainly bolts. I can usually but not always get two shots off before the sounder has disappeared. I have used semiauto ARs and SKS, I can always get at least two shots off with them. I tend to pick my rifle more based on current wind speed, that way everyone gets a chance every so often:

0-5: 8x57, 7.62x39, 5.56x45
5-10: 6.5 Grendel, 7.62x54R, 7.5x55
10+: 6.5x55, 30-06

I have to say, the K31 is fantastic for hog hunting from a stand.

As long as the pill comes out the end, I’m not particular.

I shot em with a 270, went to a 260, tried it with a 223 (bolt and AR), and finally wound up with an AR in 6.5 Grendel. I like the possibility of follow up shots, and a couple of times that has come in handy. It’s helpful and useful to shoot that Grendel and still have the pig in the scope, particularly at night. No having to re-acquire the pig or its friends.

So, if it’s just pig hunting inside 200 yards or so, there are several AR calibers that will work for you - the Grendel, the 6mm version of the Grendel, the 6.8 SPC, 300 BO, and 300 H’mr. I chose the 6.5 Grendel because I had all the bits and pieces to load for it. Might have gone to the 6.8 SPC otherwise.

Guess you just pick your poison. I've hunted with bolts and AR's. If your shot is good and nothing else needs to be shot then it does not matter. But I have hunted where there was more than one hog or my first bullet did not convince the hog to lay down. For that I'm more content with the AR in 300 BLK or 300 Ham'r. I've also shot them with 6.5 Grendel, 308 and 277 WLV. All things considered I prefer the 300 Ham'r. YMMV

I've killed hogs with a number of different bolt rifles and ARs as well. In my opinion, nothing beats a reliable hi-capacity semiauto when a sounder of 25 pigs begins to scatter at the first shot. I've shot multiple pigs with a bolt gun in a single encounter, but a semi just can't be beat. JMO, of course.

Just last week, I had a pair of coyotes out in my pasture and I cut the first one down but the second I never had a chance at because of the bolt gun

And that got me missing the old AR10

I called my local shop today and they didn’t have any of what I was looking for. About to head out now and see if I can get one.

Either one will work of course, but I’m partial to semi auto.

I use a 6.5 Grendel. If you are going with the Grendel, use a semi-auto.

There's really no good reason NOT to use a semi-auto rifle on hogs.

I use both. But one thing I notice on AR's... most shooters just miss quicker with an AR! I see it in the field and in competition. I've used both, and both work well. Yes, if you have 25 pigs and more time to engage them, a semi auto is quicker to get rounds off. But I find I am more accurate with a bolt gun. I take that split second extra to make a better shot instead of just dumping rounds (and having fun doing it!!). I did take 4 pigs several weeks ago with my SBR 300 blk out. And yes, the AR was faster than a bolt gun in that situation.

Bolt action as it’s lighter weight and I’m just more comfortable with it

Bolt, ar, lever, single shot. Depends on my mood and situation. I like to carry a lever when I'm walking. Ar if I'm sitting in a close stand, and bolt if I might get a long shot.

Semi. Friend's wife shot at hog in tall wheat, not a kill and bolt slowed down followup so she lost it. She now uses his AR and he got another one. That's the way it goes. I missed a butt shot @ 100 yrds on a small hog, tried a crossing shot as it went into the woods. Didn't get it but never would have gotten the second shot if a bolt or lever. They go 50 ft pretty fast.

stalking in my opinion a semi auto is a must. Tough to pull a couple of shots off when needed if being charged with a bolt.

Sitting in a stand I prefer the bolt

My night hunting rig wont go on the bolt so my choice is made at night right there

Just got back home from a week of pig hunting at my cousins farms down there in TX.

This was the first year we had suppressors on our AR's.

We walked into one field, had 3 hogs in it, wind wasn't quite right but we snuck up on them, started shooting, one dropped and the two little ones ran off, fired at them and I think the bullets going over their heads and hitting in the tree line turned them around and they ran back at us. We got all three, I thought I had fired 4 or 5 shots. We dragged them out of the field. Did a scan around with the thermal and there was a hog at the other end of the field 1/4 mile away. We walked back across the field and by the time we got there 2 others had joined him. We got two of the three, I thought I had fired 5 or 6 shots, but, as the third hog was running away my rifle locked back on an empty mag. I had loaded it with a full box of 20 rounds. I was shooting twice as much as I thought I was. Still a ton of fun and we were killing hogs, but I had to walk back to the truck and get more ammo (and this time a spare mag)

Suppressed SBR AR in 6.8 SPC-II. Good medicine, quick follow-ups, multiples not uncommon.

bolt for daytime/low light and semi for nighttime (with thermal). But my M&P AR-10 is having issues so now using bolt for everything until that is solved.

I shot a couple of bolt action 300 win mags and the follow-ups were few and far between...tried an AR...didn't really like it. I am shooting a 6.5 Creedmor bolt with a supressor. with the massive reduction in recoil and sound...I took 3 hogs out of the first sounder and 2 hogs from the second earlier this season. At least as successful as anything with the AR...and I really enjoy more than the AR.

It depends on where I’m hunting. In East Texas, I generally just bring my 6.8 AR with a 3x Micro Prism. Shots are never long and it carries well in wooded areas. I’ll rarely get a 2nd shot opportunity but I like the extra rounds for defensive insurance since most of the hogs I see are from walking the trails and kicking them up from their bedding area.
