I've only hunted hill country between Mason, London, and Junction.
I'm going to start hunting in Sonora. Mainly because there's a decent Axis herd and I just dont see many when I'm in the other spots. I know they are there but they never seem to show up on the 1200 acres we lease.
Anyway someone was telling me I should get bigger bodied deer in Sonora because its no longer Hill country. More west tx deer. My question for y'all is, is there any truth to this? My son did take a whitetail doe which was a lot bigger than what we usually see in the London area. She was 109 lbs. Just curious if anyone has hunted in Sutton county and what I should expect. Just want to have an idea of what a mature buck looks like horn wise out there.

The low fence lease I was on in Sonora (slightly NE of Sonora) had lots of deer, but no big trophies. Probably because the guys that ran it shot anything 4.5 years or older that was 130+. Small bodied deer IMO. In the 14 years they had the place, not one single 150 buck was taken. These guys did not feed protein and the deer had to compete with hundreds of goats and sheep for for food in very rocky drought stricken soil. I wasn't impressed at all. Better management would lead to bigger bucks and there are a ton of high fence ranches in the area that do have much bigger pen raised deer.

Depends on what part of Sutton county. Eastern Sutton county deer are typical hill country size and variety.
Western side the deer are a bit bigger in body size. Lots of axis south of 1-10
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Deer are bigger bodied in Eldorado area. You should have better horns as well then in London area as well

Go between Ft McKavett and Senora at nite...LOTS of axis north if 10.
I can't help you on the deer size except to say I've hunted axis southeast of town the last three years and the deer look like the deer we have in Paint Rock...70-80lb doe and 100-120lb buck average (dressed and some being bigger sprinkled in)

I've hunted a fair amount SE of Sonora and there are an absolute ton of axis, aoudad, and WT. 100 animals at the feeder when it goes off isn't uncommon. And it is low fenced. The WT are small and lowsy horns but I think there are WAY TOO MANY. We only go for Axis though.

We hunt about 30 miles south of Sonora and have WT and Axis for about the last 30 years. As stated most does are 60-80 and bucks 110-130ish and the one pic above is a typical mature deer for the area.
