Well done. I quit trying for the rest of the summer. Do you like the saloon doors? And how's the trigger rigged? 'Always looking to try different ideas. Next year I guess I'm gonna bite the bullet and buy a cell phone release gate. I think I gotta go wider to get the half-way smart ones to at least go in a little bit.
I just got the Saloon type door(s) 10-12 years ago because locally...that is what the feed stores were selling.
I don't really care for them with respect for the 'reason' they are designed such as they are. Supposedly hogs will root through to get to the bait OR more hogs are able to 'push' through once triggered but I've NEVER seen that happen on my traps, not once.
I believe a simple guillotine door (dropping door) is the most efficient. The wider and taller the better.
There are all kinds of 'triggers' employed. Some work better than others.
I dig a hole at the back of the pen trap and bait that out. I run a cable 'suspended' to the back of the trap, down a T-Post and across the hole.
I use a Turn Buckle to adjust the tension (sensitivity) of the trigger/cable.
I use this set up for the following reasons:
* Cable ran overhead prevents hogs from triggering the door until at least one of them is at the rear of the trap and roots the hole.
* By digging a hole and putting corn in it....IF there is a dominant hog in the group IT will claim the hole and corn there, so less chance of a little hog tripping the wire.
* By spreading some corn in the last 2/3rds of the trap....smaller/younger hogs will usually occupy themselves with that. They are usually the first to go in the trap as well. Once the smaller hogs are in the trap the older (wiser) ones are more likely to enter.
* With no cable on the ground anywhere the little ones can run around and not set the trigger off. When the larger hogs enter they will jockey for the best/most corn. In pretty short order one the older hogs will find and claim the bait hole. Just a little 'rooting' is all it takes to set the trigger off.
