I just went through this and after comparing at some big name stores (Robbins Bros and Diamonds Direct) decided to get the diamond from Blue Nile because I could get a better quality and larger diamond for less money. Then I had it set in a custom setting at my jeweler I have used for a long time (Arlington Gold and Silver). The mark-up on diamonds is pretty crazy so if you are willing to do some of the legwork you can save a good chunk of change. I will say if you go that route you should study up a little bit on how diamonds are graded and valued. That being said, Arlington Gold has a good selection and can get most anything or even custom make a piece for you. They just didn't have the size I wanted in the specs I was looking for.

I would stay clear of diamonds. Mark up is crazy and they really don’t hold their value. Gold or platinum would be a better option.

At one point in time, I had heard that Sam's Club was one of the largest diamond sellers in the US.

I haven't bought any diamonds here, but I have bought other stuff. The gold and platinum dipped roses they sell in various colors make good anniversary/Christmas/mothers day gifts.

Just find the stone/color for the anniversary and buy the corresponding rose. I did an emerald one for our 20th and we did birth stone colors from all the grandkids/kids for my mom one Christmas.

The last diamond I will ever buy is on my wife's finger. I knew then how the diamond market was manipulated and swore it was the last time I'd ever pay for one.

Does the family still own it? They are really good folks. Last time I went, I bought a diamond there like 15 years ago. Went to school with a couple of the second generation "kids". They would be in their seventies now.

As far as I know, yes. My Mom took a watch to them last week and they were more than fair with her on it.

I had some jewelry from my grandmother handed down to me and they were forthright on helping us figure out what was worth keeping. They are great.
